Hi everyone! Last summer I bought a beautiful Abercrombie & Fitch wool sweater in a gorgeous shade of orange. I stored it away with the idea of using it to create an amazing fall project. As I implemented my first idea, an autumn banner, a couple more came to mind. So I’ll be spreading this orange sweater thing over a few days. I hope you’ll come back to see Parts II and III.
I pretty much used the same method to create this banner that I’ve used in the past, but in this instance, I washed the sweater in hot water and set the dryer on hot. This way, some of the wool fibers fused together so when I cut it, it didn’t unravel.
(Oops, close-ups sure do reveal all the trouble spots–little bits of of fuzz and some hot glue left behind.) I cut out eight triangles, one for each letter, plus two more for decoration. I stamped them with black, acrylic craft paint using letter stamps I had on hand. Then I used hot glue to attach the orange jute for hanging. (Measurements: Each triangle measures 6″ across the top and 6″ straight down the middle. The sides are both 6″ long.)
Umpteen years ago I bought a box of jute that sat in a cupboard in my work room until I “rediscovered” it a while back. Now that it’s all the rage, I’ve found all kinds of uses for my many colors of jute. (Not to date myself, but when I was a Girl Scout a few years back, I learned to make macrame plant holders from jute. I realize now that I could be the author of any number of retro plant hangers being “re-discovered” at the local thrift stores.)
Here on the right you can see one of my letter stamps. I used them to make my Spring Banner this year, too. Just the right size and all lower case, they are perfect for banners.
The richness of the orange is just lovely. Don’t you think? On each end I stamped pumpkins, using a homemade stamp. A couple of years ago, I made a similar stamp and blogged about it here: Make Your Own Bird Stamp.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Be sure to come back for Parts II and III of my Wool Sweater Series.
