Vintage Finds #98

Hi everyone! I mentioned yesterday that I didn’t do a lot of shopping this past week-end. We had a couple of lazy days around the house as my sweet husband was recovering from a nasty cold. I did run out Saturday afternoon for a couple of hours and spent some time at a nearby estate sale and scoped out our local Goodwill. Here are my vintage finds from those two venues:

vintage watering can and bird house
Finding a piece of vintage, galvanized anything turns a so-so day into a good day, but this beauty is extra special (cost: $1.00, value: $25.00). Often watering cans lack the thing-y at the end of the spout–technically called a “rose,” as I learned from May Dreams Gardens. And I love the red ones, like this one. As for the bird house, I will use it for some sort of decoration, perhaps Christmas (cost: $1.00). I’ve already glittered up the roof of a plastic house I bought not too long ago–pink. It’s pretty awesome.

vintage garden wares
Since we’re talking about the garden, here are a few more related items: the scissors on the left, marked with a crown and the word, “Sheffield” (cost: 50¢, value: $6-8.00), an outdoor faucet handle (cost: 50¢, value: $6-8.00), a brass nozzle (cost: 50¢, value: $10.00), steel scissors marked “Germany” (cost: 50¢, value: $6-8.00), and a hand rake (cost: 50¢, value: $8-10.00).

vintage tool box
Some of you have probably noticed, I buy a lot of tool boxes. That’s because they sell quite well (cost: $2.00, value: $15.00). They look great open and filled with flowers, whether on your front porch or as a table center piece. And of course they’re quite functional for organizing the components of all sorts of crafts. How about scrapbooking or jewelry supplies? What would you use it for?

vintage milk can
Vintage milk cans offer great decorating possibilities, and like tool boxes, they look great on a front porch or deck (cost: $5.00, value: $30-35.00).

vintage cutting boards
Cutting boards are another collectible I tend to pick up in quantity, not so much because they sell well, I haven’t tried to sell any yet (except for painted ones). I’ve been hoarding them and displaying my collection on my country cupboard in my kitchen. I have plenty now, so I may start bringing them up to my shop, (cost: 50¢-$1.00, value: $5-10.00).

vintage cookie press and hand towelsOther kitchen items: antique cookie press (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00) and set of three, vintage towels (cost: 75¢, value: $3.00 each).

vintage canning jar funnelEnamelware funnel for canning jars (cost: $1.00, value: $12-15.00).

craft suppliesI brought home quite a few crafting supplies this week: four pre-painted bread boards (cost: 50 each), Letter stencils (free), large box of library cards (free), spool of taupe seam binding (cost: $1.00), and two plastic belt buckles ($1.00 each).

large wooden candlestickA nicely shaped, wooden candlestick to use as the base for a pedestal stand (cost: $1.00).

garage sale craft suppliesEight tart pans ($1.00), pink ribbon (free), rubber stamp with ladies face (50¢), and a belt to make another bracelet with (50¢).

vintage oak table
I’m trying to decide whether to paint this oak occasional table. While in good condition, I find that oak is not very popular right now (cost: $5.00, value: $35-40.00 if painted).

bas relief
This plaque replicates a bas relief found in Greece (cost: $1.00, value: $20-25.00).

vintage frames
I bought these two for the frames, but on closer examination, the two prints of scenes in Venice may be genuine engravings (cost: $1.00 each, value: ?).

scrap wood tray
Final Find: This old scrap wood box may not look terribly exciting, but I think it’s going to be the perfect size to use as a kitchen table centerpiece (cost: free!).  I might just give it a rub down with some Howard’s Feed-N-Wax, or perhaps dry brush it with a little chalk paint? I also think it would look great with a word or two stenciled across the side, something like “Fresh Market” or “Groceries.” What do you think?

  1. Hi Diana! 🙂
Love the tool box and the bread boards and all the garden items! You found so many nice things! I found a table just like yours at the thrift store a few months ago and painted it Annie Sloan Duck Egg, it sold right away. I think you should paint it too! You are right, oak is not the ‘best selling’ wood.
Great finds for sleeping in! 😉

  2. I love everything you got! Maybe there’s some way to just paint the top of that table and leave the legs…or dip them?! That might look pretty. I love the box at the end of this post too. I think stenciling on the side is definitely in order.

  3. I am really enjoying your blog. Just found it recently! Are you going to sell the tart tins? I would be interested in purchasing them. I teach a mixed media class and they would be perfect for a project! (Depending on cost, of course) Please let me know, Terry. Have a great day!

  4. It is interesting to see what others pick up at sales… and for some reason, I love that taupe seam binding! Great finds, great future uses! Will be popping over for the new “Vintage Charm” link tomorrow!

  5. I can’t believe you found that watering can for $1! Love the ones that have a bit of color left. You managed to find some great items, even getting out late! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jan
