Mini-Message Center
Hi everyone! I hope you had a great week-end. I mostly caught up on my sleep rather than get up and out at the crack of dawn to go garage saling. To get my vintage buying fix, I hit an estate sale late on Saturday and scoped out my local Goodwill as well. I’ll post my finds tomorrow. Today I have a useful project involving the upgrade of some metal frames I scored last year at The Christmas Tree Shop for a dollar each. My vintage touch? I used “vintage” Scrabble tiles to make some magnets.
Measuring about 10″ x 7″, it makes a perfect addition to my desktop. I can write on the white board or the chalkboard, and the Scrabble tiles are magnets that can hold a note or business card.
Here’s the frame in it’s original box, with its original paint. It was always intended to have messaging potential, but I think my upgraded version offers more versatility, and I like the sleeker black color.
First I gave it a couple of coats of chalkboard paint, because yes, you can transform just about anything into a chalkboard.
Then I used a new trick I learned last week from Dianne at Deannie’s Stash–you can use a Scrabble tile holder to make a chalk holder. I sawed the holder in half, painted it black, and glued it onto the frame.
Next, I attached magnets to the back of a few Scrabble tiles. I pick up Scrabble games whenever I see them at garage sales for a dollar or less, which is quite often.
Lastly, I slid a piece of white paper into the photo slot to make my “whiteboard” and attached a dry erase pen to the frame with a small but powerful magnet. I must tell you, writing on my new board was quite satisfying.
It has a sturdy easel back, making it easy to jot notes on either the white or blackboard.
And I can use the Scrabble magnets to hold notes, tickets, business cards, or any type of small reminder.
I can even slide a photo in the slot if I feel like it and write a special note on the side, like “My sweet daughter” or “I love you.” I bought ten of these at the $1.00 price and plan to upgrade them all in time for the Shaker Craft fair this year (six weeks in November-December). I’m going to price them at $12-15.00. Does that seem about right?
Thanks so much for stopping by today!

These are cute! I think you’re right on with the pricing!
Thanks Melissa–and thanks for affirming the price 🙂
Very cute idea…not every house has room for a big message or chalk board. Great idea, I’m sure you will sell them out!
Great opportunity for add on purchases also—letter, pushpins and magnets.
So cute Diana and I think the price will be awesome for these.

Cute idea! I think the price seems right for this item.
Pinned!
So cute and useful! Bits + pieces + imagination = nice!
Good price point – great makeover! I love Deanie’s idea for the chalk tray.
Cute Diana! I love using scrabble letters. I have spelled out the months for my calendars that I made a few years ago. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
