1 Wool Sweater, 3 Fall Projects: Pumpkin Tags (Part III)

Hi everyone! I hope you had a great week-end. We had full-on rain most of Friday, but I stopped at two nearby estate sales before driving to Troy (NY) to stock up my antique booth at Gristmill Antique Center. That meant Friday night’s family BBQ had to be held indoors, but the company, along with  the world’s best potato salad (Gramma’s recipe made by my sweet sister) and apple pie (Betty Crocker’s recipe made by my sweet father) made it a very special night. Saturday my husband and I reserved for celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary (yippee!!). I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow when I show you the week-end’s vintage finds. Today I’m giving you the third installment of my Wool Sweater Series: Pumpkin Tags.

Jack o'lantern tag
Kinda cute, aren’t they?

Here’s the sweater it all started with (in some rather poor lighting). For Project I created an autumn banner and for Project II, some adorable, stuffed pumpkins.

making a tag
I’ve posted about making tags with my die cut machine before; I hope you’re not too bored with them. I start out by cutting some cardboard roughly the size of the die, spreading on some decoupage glue (you can use Modge Podge), and then laying the cut-to-size piece of sweater on top of the glue.

Here’s my Sizzix Big Kick machine with the tag-shaped die ready for my cardboard/sweater piece to go on top and be run through the press. You don’t have to wait for the glue to dry because running it through the machine applies so much pressure to the cardboard and textile that you’re pretty much guaranteed cohesion.

Here’s a photo of one of my grain sack tags after being cut by the die.

orange sweater tags
After making several tags from the body of the sweater, I realized that the ribbed portions from the sleeves and waste band would create a textured surface imitating that of a real pumpkin.

The ribbed versions of these old sweater tags are something special.

stamped sweater tag
I even stamped one with the stamp I made and used on my autumn banner. Then I painted on some leaves and curly cues by hand.

They can be hung from knobs around the house…

sweater tag on wine bottle…or use them for holiday gifts, like bottles of wine for Thanksgiving dinner or for some other autumn celebration. I think they’ll bring a smile to your family and friends’ faces.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

    1. So glad you liked the post, Susan 🙂

The pressure of the die cut machine adheres the sweater to the cardboard in such a way that it prevents unraveling. However, you could substitute orange felt. Glue it to cardboard and then cut out a simple tag shape (a rectangle with the corners cut off one end) and then punch a hole with a sharp hole punch. I’ve done this with denim before.

Let me know how it goes for you!
