This Week’s Vintage Finds #60

Hi everyone! It’s slim pickins during the winter months in the cold, cold Northeast. In this season I become well-acquainted with the area thrift shops. They pleasantly surprised me this week with a couple of good vintage finds. Let’s take a look, shall we?

his Week's Vintage Finds #60

First up, this terrific old military or Boy Scout bugle with the wonderfully aged, brass surface. I discovered her at Goodwill. for just a few dollars, and will list her for about $60.00. For some info about bugles, check out this article at Taps Bugler.

This pretty print called, “The Valentine,” was painted by W.E. Webster, a regularly reproduced artist. There’s quite a bit of dust on the inside of the glass, so I think I’ll have to take it apart and give it a good cleaning.

Tasha Tudor, a well-loved children’s book author and illustrator, has many followers, one of which will surely want to own the wonderful book about her gardens. The retail price was $35.00; however, I will list it for $25.00.

This very cool coffee table book (weighs a ton) will appeal to all sorts of people–artists and collectors alike. The dust jacket is clear with imprints of the characters on it. The title and author are imprinted on the cover. It originally retailed for $75.00 in 1989; I will list it for $50.00. At just over 300 pages, it’s a steal.

As many of you know, Target donates large quantities of returned and rejected merchandise to Goodwill. After the holidays, all Christmas goods at the thrift were 75% off, so I picked up this little Santa hat for fifty cents and the chip board greetings–both Target products–for just twenty-five cents.

This cute little sign, snagged for 25 cents, will be useful for next year’s decorating. At that low price, I picked up two, one for me, one for Constant Companion Nancy. Aren’t I generous?!

I also picked up these 5″ vinyl, self-adhesive letters for just fifty cents. I don’t really like the whole sentiment, but the “CHEERS” part made me happy, so in the basket it went.

I thought with all the rage over cutting boards right now that this nice, apple-shaped one with coordinating knife might be a good buy. I will list this little, solid piece of mahogany for $14.99.

I snagged the clear glass tree-shaped candy holder at Goodwill for just twenty-five cents. CC Nancy had the brilliant idea of spraying [the inside] with “Looking Glass” spray paint to create a mercury glass tree. I’m very excited about the idea. The pink pedestal stand was $1 at Salvation Army and the hotel-ware creamer I uncovered at the Habitat for Humanity Restore for $2. I’ll be adding the creamer to my growing ironstone collection.

I liked the width of this frame, which I purchased at Goodwill for just $1.50. I plan to paint the frame and use the Masonite backing as the base for an altered art project.

I try to avoid buying fragile items because right now I sell primarily through the mail, via Etsy, but this pretty little dish was priced right, so home it came. I will list it for about $20.00.

Technically, I found this vintage Panasonic radio with the cool leather case during the summer, but since it was a Christmas gift for my sweet daughter, I thought I’d include it in today’s post. She absolutely loved it. Many of the items she buys, like old cameras and movie cameras, don’t really function properly anymore. Either they are broken or they require parts (like old film) that are unavailable or too expensive. But this neat little radio works great. We listened to Christmas tunes all morning after she unwrapped it.

The naked radio, sans leather case.

The markings on the back of the radio’s leather case: “Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. LTD. MADE IN JAPAN.” We bought it at a small antique shop in Ballston Spa (NY) for $10.00 (shh, don’t tell Gracie). If I were going to sell it in my shop, I’d list it for about $25.00.

That’s it for me.

  1. Great finds – again! I am staying away from auctions and any place else right now – too tempting, and I want to continue organizing and purging. Well, that and the fact that I placed some vintage orders before Christmas that I requested not be mailed until after…so they're still to come. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. As a dedicated Goodwill shopper, I applaud these finds —- especially that bugle. My sister-in-law, who specializes in our family history, has the bugle used by one of the family ancestors in the Civil War. How cool that you found one, too!

  3. You did good! The bugle has to be my favorite and what a great deal you got at GW. Love that old radio too. Here's to a great year of junking!!

  4. You make me want to go check out my local thrift shops! I haven't been in them since before Christmas!! The ironstone creamer is a keeper for sure and I always love fabulous books! Good finds all.
    hugs,
    Linda

  5. That cutting board is wonderful!!! I haven't been thrifting in a long while. It will be good to get out there this week-end for a bit.

  6. Awesome finds! I went to Habitat of Humanity resale store for the first time. I will be going back as I was more impressed with it than Goodwill. However I felt for a charity store they did over price a few items. A Milk Glass Pitcher was 40 dollars. I thought that was a bit steep.

  7. You have a GREAT GOODWILL!!!!! Love your finds… the Let is Snow sign is so much fun!

  8. Great finds! I have been hitting the VOA and Goodwill a lot lately and have most luck at the VOA. Still have things to list because I am still un-decorating!

  9. Diana … you get an A+. I believe you are the best Thrift shopper ever. Love the radio … so fun to give thrifted items for Christmas and know they will love them. My kids also love thrifted items.
    Blessing for 2015.

  10. Lots of wonderful finds, I love the cutting board and the china dish.
Happy New Year to you Diana!

  11. I adore that bugle and the first picture in the frame . The transistor radio was a steal especially since it still had the case. Awesome finds.

  12. Wowsa! You really rake it in! I never would have picked up that bugle, good to know I should keep my eyes out for things like that! The Let it Snow sign was part of Target's Dollar Bin Christmas items in 2013. I got one that says Merry Christmas on it, they are just so darn cute! You have officially motivated me out of my Goodwill slump, although with the temps at minus 26 today (windchill) and schools closed I'm not sure that I'll be making it out any time soon!

  13. Some great stuff! I love the little sign donated by Target and the pink plate stand and creamer are darling and fabulous price! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,

  14. Oh dear you really out did yourself this time Dee! So many great finds, I love that bugle, my FIL plays in Bugles Across America an organization that plays Taps live at any and all military funerals (because they switched to a recorded version) oh my gosh I'm kind of glad my thrift stores were bleak and barren this time of year because I can't imagine leaving any of that behind!
