This Week’s Vintage Finds #48: Bottles, Brushes, & Bingo

Constant Cousin Sue and I had a garage saling date this past Friday. She found a couple of goodies (always makes me happy when my partners find something they like); I, of course, found plenty.

Old Bottles

5 vintage and antique bottles, including aqua, amber, and green ones

I just love this collection of old bottles! From right to left with their values, they are:

  1. Grandee Pure Olive Oil w/cork & glass stopper: value: $20-25
  2. Aqua Mason’s Patent fruit jar (quart): value: $10-15
  3. Amber brandy: value: $6-10
  4. Green wine: value: $4-5
  5. Aqua Dewitt’s Golden Liniment: value: $20-25

I’ve sent you here a few times already, but just in case you’ve not been yet, go check out the: Historic Glass Bottle Identification and Information Website for some really fantastic info.

You may recognize the funny top on the green bottle. It’s a specialized doodad made to help with ironing. The bottle would have been filled with water and when ironing, madam would tip the bottle over and give it a few shakes, allowing water to spray on whatever article of clothing she was ironing. This would create some steam and help to press the shirt perfectly. Kind of ingenious.

Antique Bottle Brushes

Aren’t these brushes so cool? I like their twisty handles and mellow colors. Value: $3-4 ea. I’ll hang onto a couple of these to use when cleaning old bottles.

antique bingo cards and red numbered game pieces

I’ve been wanting some vintage bingo cards and tokens for a while and finally found some for a dollar [the right price]. I’ve seen the bingo tokens used as charms for bracelets and as part of altered art projects.

UPDATE: I sell vintage bingo cards like these from my antique booth in bundles of 10 for $6.

His & Hers Ironstone mugs

Another decorating rage: His and Her anything, but these ironstone examples are antiques! The bottoms are embossed “USA.” I will list the pair for about $25.

Antique French Style Frames

Pair of French style gold frames with lace decorating them

I fell in strong like with these French inspired frames. I may place prints in them and sell them as a pair, perhaps for about $25. Between the frames sits a cast metal finial, covered with some fabulous rust. Value: $10-12

The laces you see represents a mere fraction of the collection I bought, all for one very low price: $1! Isn’t it lovely?

Antique Metal Buttonhook

The buttonhook is for my daughter Gracie’s Christmas stocking. She’s taken a shine to them, and I think they will make a great collection. This small, simple one would have been used for shirt and [men’s] collar buttons.

Who can resist vintage, 100% wool fedoras? Well, me, obviously, and Gracie. I bought five, but two have mysteriously disappeared into her closet, I suspect. Since they weren’t manufactured by any big names, I will list them for about $20 each.

Vintage Tray & Tin

I bought these tin pieces at separate sales. I thought the ricotta tin was unique and interesting. It’s randomly pierced with machine-made holes (to drain the ricotta?), so I’m not sure how the cheese would have been sold–n a plastic bag perhaps?

The 1960s era tray with that great aqua background depicts a delightful Cony Island scene. And it’s marked both Pepsi and Ballonoff Metal Products Co. on the back.

Ballonoff manufactured all kinds of metal goods, especially home goods like canister sets and dust pans. This tray seems to be selling on eBay for about $15. Pepsi nuts collectors might want to check out Mike & JoAnn’s Pepsi Web Site.

Vintage Ice Skates

Pair of vintage white ice skates against a black door

Aren’t these vintage skates amazing! I’m in love with them. Ever since last Christmas, when the blog world was full of ways to decorate with skates, I’ve wanted a pair.

Ask my cousin, I may have squealed with joy, especially at the price: a buck. I kind of like them pared down, hanging on the door all by themselves. I don’t know; maybe I’ll add some pine cones or holly. What do you think?

UPDATE: I sell skates in two different ways:

  • Stuffed with greenery and berries and finished with a large bow
  • Filled with greenery and attached to a tree that’s attached to a sled. Here’s an example.

  1. Those ice skates made my heart beat just a little bit faster; memories flooded back of cold Michigan nights at the local outdoor rink, actually a section of the playground of my elementary school that simply was flooded with a hose. Good times. Wish I still had a pair of those skates. I do have, though, my dad's old Dutch skates that his grandfather brought from the Netherlands. I'll take a new photo and send you the link. They're so precious.

    1. I'm from NY's north country, near the Canadian border, so I've experienced some cold winter nights while ice skating–so many great memories. Our rink was the same–a flooded area of our school yard. Your Dad's Dutch skates must be amazing–I'd LOVE to see a picture.

  2. Diana, you and I have very similar taste in thrift store items! I love your bottles, and pretty much everything! Now, I'm feeling the itch to go thrifting…

  3. Wow, you really found some great items! I love old skates. I have a couple and use them in my Christmas and Winter displays. I always pick up vintage lace and old bottles, but never get them for such a fabulous price as that! I also love bingo goodies. Great finds for sure!
    hugs,
    Jann
