This Week’s Vintage Finds #21

I took a break from the family on Saturday morning and ventured out to three estate sales in the Schenectady area. Here are this week’s vintage finds:

This Week's Vintage Finds #21

The roll of brown paper in the back is for packaging and frame backing. I love old red and green garden tools and pick them up whenever the price is right, and it was. I always pick up keys, and now that I’m addicted to gluing plates on pedestals (old candle sticks), I always pick up cute plates (the white one) and candlesticks (in the back). I’m going to do a post on giving old wooden candlesticks a Pottery Barn look soon.

You might be surprised to know that ice cream scoops are quite collectible. This one is from the 60s or 70s and the name “Peerless” is embossed on the lever mechanism. The one in the back is Dansk and I bought that one to keep. Dianne Zweig has a good article on her blog about soda fountain collectibles in general.

I have no idea what this is, but I was attracted to its shape and the weight of it in my hand.
Any guesses as to what it might be?

This Week's Vintage Finds #21

I just read an article about selling vintage ties, so I went out on a limb. Well, not really a limb, they were pretty cheap. The one on the left is 100% wool, made in Scotland; the one on the right is 100% Dacron polyester, made in Ulster, New York (1 hour south of me!). I’ll report back on their popularity, or lack thereof after I list them for sale 🙂

I’m still planning on framing some flags. What I liked about this one is it came already aged. No tea dying necessary; it’s all nicely browned. I think it’ll look great in a black frame. I’ll keep you posted.

This Week's Vintage Finds #21 ladders

I COULD NOT pass up these ladders!! Marked $4 each, the ladders seemed to be calling my name. Then the nice gentleman in charge said, “Everything’s half off today.” So naturally I responded, “I’ll take both the ladders.” As he reached up to get them off the wall for me he said, with not one word of prodding from me, “I’ll tell you what. You can have them for $1 each.” SOLD! And then he found a boy to carry them out to my van and help me bungee cord them safely in the vehicle.

“What am I going to do with them?” you ask. Well, I’m thinking I’m going to cut them in half to either lean against a wall to hang things from, or I’ll cut them in half in such a way that they can be connected at their peak, making them into saw horse-shaped sort of thingies. Marianne who has a lovely decorating blog called Songbird, wrote an article providing 20 Creative Ideas for Decorating With Ladders. Check it out.

Okay, so this was a bit of a crazy purchase. But what do you think when you see these cute little green metal cones? Christmas trees, right?!! I know they’re for cemetery flowers, but once again, the price was right. I’m thinking I’m going to snip off the pointy metal tips and voila–Christmas trees. When I’m right, I’m right.

  1. You have some great finds there! We actually have one of those ice cream scopes, an old friend gave us years ago. (The smooth one..works like a charm!) my husband thinks the mystery find could be a crank! What do you think? Cute little Christmas trees…lol

Blessings and have a great day!

  2. Awesome, awesome scores, Diana! I had purchased a very long ladder like yours at an estate sale (14'!), and had it in our booth as a display piece for quilts & other textiles (for sale, too). It didn't sell, so I cut it in two and both pieces sold within 1 week – and I made more $ doing it that way – go figure!

  3. The metal thing might be a crank, like from an ice cream churn? Can't get over your ladder deal. Good going! Thanks for sharing this at my History & Home link party, hope you'll join again next Tuesday. -Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

    1. Someone else thought it might be a crank. Seems like a strong possibility. I wouldn't miss your party for anything! I just put your button on my sidebar today 🙂

  4. Great finds, love old tools, I have some hanging on the outside of my barn for decoration. The metal, might be a handle of some sorts. Great finds

  5. Wonderful finds! I am intrigued by the green floral holders. I think they would be super transformed into Christmas trees! Found you through the blog hop!
