This Week’s Vintage Finds #90

Hi everyone! I may have mentioned last week that I like to slow down my garage saling and thrifting during the warmest summer months, and that may’ve been true last week (mostly). But this Saturday dawned cooler with no humidity and the little town of Medusa advertised a town-wide garage sale. We’d never been to Medusa and we were up for a drive in the country, so I broke my “no-shopping fast” and off we drove. I think you’ll agree, we found some great vintage items.

vintage bread boardsStarting with these two cutting boards. After I clean them up and rub them with some mineral oil, I’ll keep the larger one for my “collection” (cost: $3.00, value: $12-15.00) and will sell the smaller one (cost: $1.00, value: $8.00).

vintage mashers or darner (?)These two masher-type pieces came from the same sale (cost: $1.00 each, value: $10-12.00 each). They’ll both need some cleaning and oil, too. The top of the larger one looks like a darner, but I’ve never seen one so long, and with a masher-type bottom. Maybe it’s for darning really long socks? Thoughts anybody?

Here’s another view of the tops. The turned handle on the masher is quite nice.

vintage milton bradley chinese checker board
This double-sided game board has nice, graphic appeal and would make great wall art, hanging with other game boards, especially. Manufactured by Milton Bradley, probably sometime in the 1950s, it can still be used for Chinese Checkers or

chess, of course (cost: $1.00, value: $12-15.00).

vintage mickey mouse printing set
I actually bought this little printing kit to use–I thought the stamped letters would look pretty cool, but it would probably sell well also, particularly on Etsy, given the popularity of Mickey Mouse (cost: 50 cents, value: $20.00+). I have to do some research on this one. For some interesting info about Mickey, check out this Collector’s Weekly article: Mickey Mouse Collectibles.

vintage blue crock with floral decoration
I don’t know too much about this pretty little crock with lovely, hand-painted floral decoration (cost: 50 cents, value: $10.00).

bottom of vintage crock
No mark on the bottom but some signs of age.

vintage license platesI’m so tempted to keep these beauties for some kind of upcycling project, but I think they’ll sell quite well in my shop (cost: $2.00 each, value: $10-20.00 each, except the bottom one). I need to research the bottom plate a bit more. Check out this eBay Automobile License Plate Buying Guide for more info.

vintage hinge
I’ve seen rusty old hinges used for angel wings in assemblage pieces, so I picked up two (cost: 50 cents each).

vintage stove toolThis old “lid lifter” would have been used to pry metal plates off of the top of a cast iron stove to set in pots for cooking (cost: 50 cents, value: $10.00).

vintage door plate
Coming from the same sale as the above two items, this door plate was a freebie.

vintage ironstone platter
My camera had trouble focusing on the plate because of the lack of contrast, so I popped in one of my homemade flash cards. They’ve been selling quickly at my shop for a buck each. The ironstone platter is American made (cost: $1.00, value: $8-10.00). Be sure to check out my Antique & Vintage Ironstone Potter Price Guide for more info.

vintage flower frogs, vase, garden tool
Flower frogs sell quite quickly from my booth (cost: $1.00 each, value: $6-8.00 each), as do garden tools (cost: 50 cents, value: $8.00). The planter was an impulse buy; I just love the green glaze, but it bears several chips around the top, so I’m not sure it’s sale-able (cost: $1.00). Check out: Decorating With Flower Frogs and A Cool Collectible: Flower Frogs.

vintage metal bird cage
This poor old bird cage doesn’t look like much, but I think once it’s cleaned up, the tray is painted, and it’s filled with some wonderful, vintage doo dads, it’ll look great (cost: $2.00, value: $25-30.00). Don’t you think?

vintage french doorFinal Find: I know none of the rest of you could have passed up this beauty. She needs a lot of cleaning, but it will be worth it. I’m thinking about putting it horizontally on my mantle or on the hall wall connecting my foyer to the kitchen (cost: $3.00, value: $45.00).

  1. I have to say that your reflection in the window (last photo) makes you look like an angel. It made me do a double-take! Thank you, as always, for sharing your finds with us.

  2. Another week of great finds. I particularly like the bread boards. Since they have become such a popular collectible I rarely find them anymore. Can’t wait to see what you do with the rusty hinge.

  3. Great finds Diana. I have a thing for bread boards and those are pretty cool. Love the window too. Have a great week.

  4. I have recently discovered your blog and really love your approach. When I bring home garage sale or antique store purchases, I always clean and research them first thing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the resources where we can do our own research. I envy some of your finds and the prices! Here in California I don’t seem to find those kind of deals. Thank you.

  5. The last license plate is possibly a ‘vanity’ plate since there is no state mentioned. I love that sounded out it says ‘aviator.’ I live in a state that only requires one license plate at the rear of the vehicle. Perhaps this one graced the front of a pilot’s vehicle…who knows.

    1. Lori you are brilliant. AV8R = aviator.
It’s early morning here I don’t even know if I would have caught that in the afternoon.
I wonder how long vanity plates have been available? Or if that was just a happy coincidence.

Diana, I have visited your blog dozens of times. It is wonderful. Full of facts, fun, and inspiration.
Hoping you to do a post on the wonderful finds you saved from the neighbors dumpster.

  6. Hi Diana! 🙂

  7. ps…meant to also say that I love the new look of your blog, it all looks amazing now that your kinks are all out! 🙂

  8. Love all your vintage finds! What great deals you got for everything! That window? $3 whaaattt! Gosh I wish I could find myself a pair of vintage cutting boards…so great.

  9. You found steals, not deals this week. Amazed at the bargains you found. Of course the window is at the very top of my “LOVE” list followed by the blue crock, doorplate, and the cage. I never pass up a cage. Once you stage it, it will sell.

  10. Wow, you did find great stuff! Love the mashers and the games. I recently picked up a few cutting boards and I need to do a vignette with them. Can’t believe that window was only $3. Great score!! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
