This Week’s Vintage Finds #86

Hi everyone! As I mentioned in my last post, I squeezed in some garage saling this week-end with both my sweet daughter and my sweet husband. I managed to pick up a few, fun vintage finds. Ready to take a look?

vintage hanson scale adirondack girl @ heart

Scales tend to be very popular. Often quite functional, and, like clock faces, covered with vinage-style numbers, people enjoy decorating with them (cost: $5.00, value: $35.00).

It needs some cleaning, and I will give it a coat of mineral oil to enhance its appearance and protect it from further rust.

vintage hulk lunch box adirondack girl @ heart
I’ve never bought or sold a single lunch box, but I thought I’d start with this guy (cost: 50 cents, value: ?). It may be worthless given all the rust. Sometimes I like to buy things like this just to learn from them.
vintage hulk lunch box
It dates to 1978. Did you know lunch box collectors are also called, “Paileontologists?” For more info, check out this informative Ebay Guide: Buying & Collecting Guide to Children’s Lunch Boxes.

Some kitchen wares (mostly). The grated cheese containers (left) make great string holders since they have holes on the top, which the string can come up through (cost: 25 cents each, value: $4-5.00). The potato masher must be a child’s toy given its small size (cost: 25 cents, value: $6.00).

vintage maxwell house jar
I liked the lid on this jar with all the stars (cost: 25 cents, value: $3.00). I will probably sell it filled with something interesting.
vintage grated cheese jar
One of the grated cheese jars still has it’s label. Looks like it dates to about the 50s.
vintage tool
I have no idea what this tool is, definitely for the garage, though, not the kitchen (cost: 50 cents, value: $7-8.00).
industrial metal parts

I love these industrial, metal parts; I paid a premium for them (cost: 5.00 for all three, value: $15-20.00). I will also rub these down with some mineral oil.

industrial metal parts
Wouldn’t they make terrific candle-holders?
vintage pendleton throw and oak splint basket

I’m in love with this perfect-condition, Pendleton throw (cost: $3.00, value: $30.00). I have plans for the small, oak splint basket (cost: $2.00, value: $18.00). To learn more about basket values, check out my Vintage & Antique Basket Price Guide.

vintage pendleton label
The iconic Pendleton label, sewn on the corner of the blanket, gives an indication of the age, c.1960-70s. For help dating your Pendleton pieces, check out the Vintage Fashion Guild’s article about Pendleton.
vintage pewter candle sticks

Great for French-style decorating, this pair of pewter candlesticks cost just a dollar for the pair (cost: $1.00, value: $28.00). They sit on a gauzy, linen curtain panel I purchased for the fabric (cost: $1.00).

This Week's Vintage Finds #86

I bought this atrociously ugly men’s valet/mirror for a dollar with [very good] intentions of giving it a relaxing spa treatment makeover. (The relaxing spa treatment will be mine after I’ve finished cleaning, pricing, sorting, and storing all my precious purchases.)

This Week's Vintage Finds #86

You never know when you’re going to need a set of table legs, do you? I’m thinking maybe attached to a suitcase, to make a side table? (cost: $2.00)

yard sticks
With all the great yardstick crafts out there, I couldn’t pass up these school bus-yellow versions (cost: 10 cents each). I bought fifteen of them(!).
vintage lucite pitcher adirondack girl @ Heart
I think this unusual, Lucite pitcher dates to about the 1960s (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00)

The body of the pitcher is triangular in shape. This is a close-up of the spout. Quick History: Lucite
VINTAGE BUTTONS Adirondack girl @ heart

Final Find: a baggie filled with vintage buttons–love the red ones, especially (cost: $1.00 for all, value: $1-2.00 a card). I just sold a little framed set of buttons I posted about a while ago, so I plan to frame and sell these as well. Learn more about collecting buttons with these posts: Buttons Part I, Buttons Part II.

Thanks so much Kathy for the feature!
Bye for now,

  1. The tool with all the teeth is a curry comb used to groom cows or horses. I have one left over from our dairying days. We now use it to comb our Yellow Lab. He loves it. One side has shorter teeth, the other side has longer teeth.

  2. I wish I could find treasures like you do at such great prices! I love and collect vintage utensils in red and green and never find gems so thrifty as you. I love Hanson scales…as that is my maiden name..but have never found one for $5 anywhere! I think I need to go thrifting with uou…

  4. What a fun assortment of finds! I recognized the curry comb right away too, but it looks like Lori beat me to the explanation of what it was used for. We used to have one on our farm when I was a kid that we'd use to groom our Shetland pony with.

  5. Great finds! I too, love old jars with neat lids. You mentioned using mineral oil to brighten and stop rust. Is mineral spirits the same as mineral oil?
    Thank you.

  6. Love your finds! I thrift religiously, for an embarrassingly long time now, haha. My family has a lot of Pendleton throws/blankets having grown up in the PNW and my brother worked for them. Your throw is actually worth a little more!

  7. Wow, you really did good this week! Love scales and have a collection. I pick up any jar with a red lid. What can I say, red just makes me happy. 🙂 Love finding buttons still on the card, and that Pendleton is fabulous! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
