This Week’s Vintage Finds #86
Hi everyone! As I mentioned in my last post, I squeezed in some garage saling this week-end with both my sweet daughter and my sweet husband. I managed to pick up a few, fun vintage finds. Ready to take a look?
Scales tend to be very popular. Often quite functional, and, like clock faces, covered with vinage-style numbers, people enjoy decorating with them (cost: $5.00, value: $35.00).
It needs some cleaning, and I will give it a coat of mineral oil to enhance its appearance and protect it from further rust.
Some kitchen wares (mostly). The grated cheese containers (left) make great string holders since they have holes on the top, which the string can come up through (cost: 25 cents each, value: $4-5.00). The potato masher must be a child’s toy given its small size (cost: 25 cents, value: $6.00).
I love these industrial, metal parts; I paid a premium for them (cost: 5.00 for all three, value: $15-20.00). I will also rub these down with some mineral oil.
I’m in love with this perfect-condition, Pendleton throw (cost: $3.00, value: $30.00). I have plans for the small, oak splint basket (cost: $2.00, value: $18.00). To learn more about basket values, check out my Vintage & Antique Basket Price Guide.
Great for French-style decorating, this pair of pewter candlesticks cost just a dollar for the pair (cost: $1.00, value: $28.00). They sit on a gauzy, linen curtain panel I purchased for the fabric (cost: $1.00).
I bought this atrociously ugly men’s valet/mirror for a dollar with [very good] intentions of giving it a relaxing spa treatment makeover. (The relaxing spa treatment will be mine after I’ve finished cleaning, pricing, sorting, and storing all my precious purchases.)
You never know when you’re going to need a set of table legs, do you? I’m thinking maybe attached to a suitcase, to make a side table? (cost: $2.00)
Final Find: a baggie filled with vintage buttons–love the red ones, especially (cost: $1.00 for all, value: $1-2.00 a card). I just sold a little framed set of buttons I posted about a while ago, so I plan to frame and sell these as well. Learn more about collecting buttons with these posts: Buttons Part I, Buttons Part II.

The tool with all the teeth is a curry comb used to groom cows or horses. I have one left over from our dairying days. We now use it to comb our Yellow Lab. He loves it. One side has shorter teeth, the other side has longer teeth.
Great finds, Diana! 10 cents for yardsticks? No brainer! Were you able to get that jar in the mail yesterday? 🙂 Thanks!
I wish I could find treasures like you do at such great prices! I love and collect vintage utensils in red and green and never find gems so thrifty as you. I love Hanson scales…as that is my maiden name..but have never found one for $5 anywhere! I think I need to go thrifting with uou…

I think your Hulk lunch box is your best find! Someone will want that!
Great finds-love the scale and I think my brother had that same Hulk lunch box!
Wow! You found some great items–especially the scale–I'm jealous! First visit to your blog.
Love the scale – I found a great one a few months ago and can't part with it – I love it!
What a fun assortment of finds! I recognized the curry comb right away too, but it looks like Lori beat me to the explanation of what it was used for. We used to have one on our farm when I was a kid that we'd use to groom our Shetland pony with.
Love the scale. I never find good stuff, either my area stinks or I am a stinky looker! 😉
I love anything vintage.
Found you at Mrs. Olson's.
Great finds!! Visiting from Thursday Favorite Things.
Fun treasures! Love those yellow yardsticks and that fabulous old scale. Thanks for sharing your goodies at Vintage Inspiration Party.
Great finds! I too, love old jars with neat lids. You mentioned using mineral oil to brighten and stop rust. Is mineral spirits the same as mineral oil?
Thank you.
Laura
Love your finds! I thrift religiously, for an embarrassingly long time now, haha. My family has a lot of Pendleton throws/blankets having grown up in the PNW and my brother worked for them. Your throw is actually worth a little more!
Love all the finds, you got my hobby down! Thanks for sharing this on Dream Create and Inspire!

Wow, you really did good this week! Love scales and have a collection. I pick up any jar with a red lid. What can I say, red just makes me happy. 🙂 Love finding buttons still on the card, and that Pendleton is fabulous! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Absolutely charming finds! I am delighted to share that your post will be featured in this week's Home and Garden Thursday,
