This Week’s Vintage Finds #83
Hi everyone! I mentioned yesterday that this past week-end I attended a blogging conference in NYC, so ordinarily, I wouldn’t have any vintage finds to share. But I’ve gotten kind of backed up on my posts, so I’ve got fresh new loot to show you from sales my sweet husband and I attended last week-end.
I adore the mod artwork on the cover of this 1972 Sewing Book (cost: $1.00, value: $12.00). Right around 1972 I took a sewing class at a Singer sewing store, and I’ve used the skill my whole life. This book brings back all those memories. Now my sweet daughter, who loves to attend comic cons, is interested in making some of her own costumes, so we have a date to go pattern shopping.
And inside you’ll find more of the same. wonderful drawings and gorgeous colors.
Next up are some sweet sewing supplies to compliment the sewing book. I found these beautifully colored spools difficult to pass up, especially at five for a dollar. The wooden darner has a slightly elongated shape that is new for me (cost: fifty cents, value: $6-8.00). I feel an article about darners coming on…
The top of this sturdy little side table is pretty messed up. It’ll need some paint or a good sanding, haven’t decided which yet. I really like the nice, simple lines (cost: $5.00, value: $28-32.00).
More old books! I know many of you can relate to my struggle not to buy every old book I see; they are just so wonderful–inside and out. [Said the lady who’s house is about to be overrun with books…] And I must confess, I have a thing about glass containers as well. Yep, I know, many of you do, too. This nice, large biscuit jar would be great for food storage, vintage display, or as a terrarium (cost: $1.50, value: $20.00).
The end papers of The Volume Library are genuine, marbleized paper. Gorgeous, right? The whole book is falling apart and several pages are missing, so I’m hoping to use the paper for a future project (cost:$1.00).
The book also contains a series of state maps (in pink!) that are quite nice.
The small white book, The Princess & Other Stories by Alfred Lord Tennyson, had this card tucked inside: “Many Happy Returns of the day, Lou.” Isn’t the handwriting lovely?!
I like to have fun, quirky items in my booth, like this Magic 8 ball. Should I have bought this for fifty cents? Magic 8 says, “Definitely yes,” (Value: $10.00).
Here’s another item that falls into the fun, quirky category–leather boxing gloves (cost: $2.00, value: $35.00). The fellow running the estate sale told my husband that they belonged to his father, who used them in the military during WW II. Wouldn’t they make a great decoration in the right setting? A game room or man cave, perhaps.
They don’t make feather dusters like they used to, do they? Just look at those gorgeous feathers. Must be from an ostrich or an emu (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00).
Brand name: “Lint Master.” Awesome.
I’ve never owned any fishing floats before (cost: $1.00, value: $20-25.00 for the three). These hand blown specimens have a distinctly 60s vibe to me, so I’m wondering if they were made just for decoration? Or are they genuinely old, but placed in this jute contraption for decorative purposes? The green dish with grape decoration was too cheap to pass up (cost: 59 cents, value: $6-8.00). The small pedestal stand is a piece of Fostoria glass in the fairly common American pattern. Again, too cheap to pass up (cost: $1.50, value: $10.00).
I was originally attracted to the glass container that holds this ship (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00). I thought I might take the ship out and replace it with something really amazing. What? I don’t know yet.
Here’s a close-up  of the ship itself.
I think this is my favorite find. I’ve never seen a white tool box before, and with the black accents, I think it’s just wonderful (cost: $3.00, value: $25.00). It offers many decorating possibilities.
Speaking of tool boxes. I scooped up these two interesting pieces, both of which are screaming for a good cleaning. The chisel in back with a wire brush, followed by some mineral oil, and the measuring thingy in front (which I love), with some Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. Like the tool box, they have great decorative potential (cost: fifty cents each, value: $8.00–chisel, $15.00–measuring thingy).
I found this nice galvanized tub buried in the basement at an estate sale and took it home with me for just $5.00. I’ve kept others that I’ve bought, so I’m not sure of its resale value. I’m thinking somewhere in the $25-30.00 ball park.
Final Find: A homemade bird feeder with a funky, graduated roof . I think painted, glittered, and garlanded, it could be a terrific Christmas decoration. What do you think?

Yes, please! A darner lesson. i found a mushroom-shaped one several months ago. Sold to me as a hat stand. I would have bought every single thing you did. My favorites? The boxing gloves, the bird feeder (do not touch it except with wax!), the table and the BOOKS! Maybe find a game board for the table top.

You are a true treasure hunter Diana! What's not to love about old books and glass containers? The handle on the feather duster caught my eye right off and I love the boxing gloves! I think that they could make a fun and quirky wedding display. Something about time to take off the boxing gloves, have fun and kiss and make up!
