This Week’s Vintage Finds #78

Hi everyone! I mentioned yesterday that I had the chance to attend my favorite neighborhood garage sale this week-end, in the Westlawn area of Schenectady (NY). It’s huge, and I love it. I pretty much filled up the van with all kinds of vintage goodness. I can show you most of what I discovered, but some will have to wait for another day. I plain ran out of time preparing this post.

Isn’t this little guy sweet?

(cost: $1.00, value: $18.00)

He’s probably just barely vintage, but he’s so darn cute.

This horse and cart give off a gypsy vibe to me. I’m guessing it’s a souvenir from someone’s Eastern European vacation (cost: $1.00, value: $35.00).

The graphics on this bottle warmer box are just darling (cost: 50 cents, value: $8.00).

I’ve sold a few bejeweled pieces like this one. I don’t know a lot about them, but they seem to date from about the 50s or 60s. I think this one may be a bobby pin holder (cost: $1.00, value: $18.00).

I love buying my craft supplies at secondary markets–I save so much. The wooden E, A, & T cost just a dollar for all three letters, and the Modge Podge and moss each cost 50 cents. The lovely, aged terra cotta pot was free.

Made by Hall, this lovely Art Deco pitcher would beautify any table (cost: $1.00, value: $20.00).

The Hall mark on the bottom dates it to between 1930 and 1970.

Halloween collectors enjoy all kinds of doo-dads and whatits, including these cute cup cake picks (cost: free, value: $3 for the picks, $1 for the cat/owl thingy).

I never pass up a good deal on a Hummel because my mother loves them (cost: $1.00, value: $25-30.00).

The W. Germany mark was used from 1945 to 1990, when East and West Germany were separate. I found a chart of Hummel marks that narrows the production date down even further to 1972-1979.

I bought these two for my front stoop. I’m thinking I’ll stencil the flower bucket and paint the high chair, and then fill them with plants (cost: $1 bucket, $2 high chair).

Small tables like this one tend to sell very well (cost: $3.50, value: $20-25.00).

I bought this ugly beautiful jewelry box for my sweet daughter. She saw one like it at a thrift store recently, but decided not to buy it because it cost too much. I think this one could be prettied up so easily with some paint and new knobs (cost: $1.00).

Not only does it have nifty drawers on the inside, it has a music box, which she will really enjoy.

This wicker tray is one of my favorite finds of the week-end. I love its sturdiness and warm color (cost: $2.00, value: $25.00).

Four restaurant ware mugs (cost: $1.00/4, value: $10.00).

Neat Mickey alarm clock, not too old but definitely salable (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00).

Vintage red metal tool box–not sure if I’m going to try to remove the name or not (cost: 50 cents, value: $10.00).

A few pieces of antique jewelry (cost: 50 cents each). The pin on top has dragons on it; the piece with blue stones on the left is a clip; and the heart-shaped lock is just wonderful.

100% plastic ornaments, c. 1970 (cost: 50 cents, value: 50 cents?!!).

Box of Shiny Brites, c. 1950s, (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00).
Check out my post on 1950s Christmas ornaments.

Mix of Polish (on left) and aqua Shiny Brites (on right), (cost: $1.00, value: $15.00).

West German blown glass bells (cost: 50 cents, value: $8.00).

Final Find: I have to admit it, I have absolutely no idea what these are. Do you? (cost: $2.00/2, value:???).

  1. Oh wow, you've stumped me too on that last one! Love your finds – that PIG!, the tray, and the pitcher! Can't believe the Hummel was only $1. I've seen some of those go for $250 (older yes, but still)….
    Rita

  2. What great finds! As for that last item – I have no idea. If you're going to sell your Christmas stuff on etsy and need help pricing, etc… let me know… I've sold a lot of it!

  3. I've never seen that item either…very different…wondered if it was some kind of stretcher? I always love seeing your finds, kind of like being on the hunt with you! I always love vintage Christmas…but I love that big tray, too!

  4. Wow! More treasures! I love that piggy. My two cents' worth of advice on the tool/tackle box: keep the name there. The little drama masks with it add such a lovely touch!

I know you're having a blessed and bountiful day. Me, too!

  5. The Hummel is nice – my grandmother collected them and now my mom has them.

I hope someone lets you know what that last item is – that's a mystery to me.

  6. That little piggy is just adorable! Love the ornaments that are only worth what you paid! Funny! I think I just picked some up like that. They are all beaded and kitschy and ugly! I just love the red tool box. The comedy/tragedy masks makes me think that it was a little boys' or teens theatre box to take back and forth to drama practice. Not sure where that came from!

  7. Wow what a haul! I think that adorable little pig is my favorite but the ornaments are cool too. I really enjoy how you list your cost and the value…do you look them up somewhere or is the value you post just based on your personal experience?

  8. I love the wicker tray and would love to see that little stand revamped. I think the mystery items look like something you'd hang over a bowl and turn the handle so the contents could be stirred. Always a pleasure, wondered if you ever post upcoming events such as sales, flea markets, etc. on your blog before they take place?

  9. That pig has the sweetest face! I hope you keep the red toolbox just the way it is. great bargains on great items. Is the table a telephone table or a dictionary stand? I cannot believe an object has been discovered that neither you or Rita can identify.

  10. the odd item makes me think of fishing, so maybe it is something for that. Does it spin when crank is turned?

  11. You really found some great things! That little pig is adorable.I think that little high chair is my favourite thing. I'd love one in my garden. I love the look of galvanized anything and that flower bucket is lovely. Sorry I can't help with those thiniges. I've never seen anything like them and I have no idea what they could be.

  12. You find the most amazing things … such a good eye for the unusual. Christmas ornaments are a real steal. Your final find is interesting, but have no idea what it is. Good luck in solving that mystery.
    Blessings,

  13. Always love seeing what you find! I'm one of those people that love Halloween doo-dads. lol! Can't believe the price of the Hummel. Love the aqua pitcher and vintage Christmas! Have no idea on the last item either. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
