This Week’s Vintage Finds #63

Hi everyone! My goodness, it’s cold outside. I’m sorry to say, but I have pretty slim pickins in the vintage department to show you today. I’m going to do my best to stretch it out and play it up though. I made my purchases at one estate sale, Salvation Army, and Captain’s Treasures.

Interesting fact: American Tourister luggage company was founded in 1933 in the tiny state of Rhode Island by Sol Koffler. He developed all kinds of innovations in luggage, including interior linings and pockets.

This sweet little dish comes from Torquay on the southern coast of England. These souvenir wares have been manufactured in that area for decades. They are also known as “motto ware” since they invariably contain a pithy saying of some sort. Production ceased in the 1980s. This later piece, in perfect condition, is worth about $15.00.

They remind me of Pennsylvania Dutch redware, only less sturdy and not as old. Torquay ware chips very easily, so it is rare to find a piece in perfect condition. Check out the Torquay Pottery website for more interesting info.

I thought this cutting board would be a nice addition to my collection, especially since our last name begins with a “P.” I’m considering staining it to give it some age. For $4.00 I decided it was mine.

Valentine’s Day inspired me to snatch up this little hand-painted creamer. I’m kind of a sucker for pink roses. It’s not worth a great deal, probably about ten dollars.

I know these are new, not vintage, but I landed such a great deal, I wanted to share it: brand new leather gloves (originally from Target)–just two bucks! I’m always losing gloves, so I like to have spare on hand.

Nostalgia is often the reason people buy vintage, and I am no exception. During grade school, I owned a suede belt similar to this one. I’ll learn whether such things are popular or not when I list it in my Etsy shop (for about $12.00).

More non-vintage purchases. This time from Michaels: the burlap-y ribbon cost just $3, marked down from $10, and the letter stamps were just $1.80, so I couldn’t pass them up. Could I?

I also picked up two wool sweaters, circa 1980 for $1 each. My plan is to felt them. I’ve been researching the process since I’ve never done it before. It seems like a great way to upcycle unattractive, wool sweaters. I’ll report back.

And finally, the best buy of the week-end: an American Tourister suitcase in burgundy with a beautiful satin lining. Ready for travel or for home decor. It’s a terrific color and in excellent condition, worth about $40-50.00.

It dates from about the 1950s and I’m quite smitten with it. Happily, I bought it for half off at the second day of an estate sale that I just happened to drive by. I’m going to have to give some thought to whether it’s a keeper or a seller. What do you think I should do? Keep or sell?

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. Love the suitcase … it would be hard for me to give up if the inside is clean. Very nice cutting board. I have some vintage ones with a painted rim and love them that way. Thanks for sharing your great finds.

  2. Diana, good stuff, even if not for resale. If you're on the fence, keep the suitcase a while, see if you use for anything, then sell later. That's what I do. I've kept many but sell many too.
I'll be anxious to hear about your felting projects.

  4. I love that suitcase. It's perfection! I'd have to keep it for a little while at least. I tend to do that with lots of things, and then I can happily let them go. That creamer with the pink roses is sweet.

  5. Great finds. I'm interested in learning how your felting project goes. I haven't had much success felting in the past.

  6. Nice mix of vintage and new finds! I would definitely keep the luggage…they are great for storage. I probably would have fought you for the cutting board as my last name also begins with "P"!
    Have a wonderful week.

  7. I LOVE that little hand-painted creamer! Thanks so much for joining us at the #HomeMattersParty – we hope to see you again next week!
