This Week’s Vintage Finds #59

Hi everyone! Even with all the Christmas chores to get done, I managed to sneak in some thrifting this past week. On Friday I hit an estate sale and on Saturday my sweet husband and I popped into Goodwill as we were running errands. Then during the week, I had a “play date” with Constant Companion Nancy. She and I met at Salvation Army, had a coffee at Starbucks, and finished our date with a stop at Hobby Lobby. I always find winter pretty slim pickins as far as vintage goes, but I managed to scrounge up a few things.

This little collection of goods came from the estates sale.

Top left is a spool of GE magnet wire (whatever that is), next, some jute, some clothespins (I like their wire wrap), a roll of very cool, off-white cotton seam binding, and finally, a nice old folding ruler.

Here’s a close up of the spool.

And the folding ruler, by “Revere.” I will likely list it for about $15.00

The other purchases I made at the estate sale: four tins of buttons.

Each for one dollar.

I can’t say that I unearthed any spectacular specimens,
but there are plenty to sell and plenty to craft with.
I’ve done three posts about buttons: Part I, Part II, and Decorating With Buttons.

We uncovered the large wooden church at Goodwill.
I plan to paint and glitter it for Christmas 2015.

These cute little spice containers came from Salvation Army–CC Nancy took some, I took some.

They’re nothing special, but they cost 79 cents each, and we both plan to glitter them up for 2015.

The “hat box” is really a “wig box.” I liked its diminutive size. I’ll be tossing the wig. The mercury ball is a new imitation of an old German type of ornament called a “kugel.” It’s already found a home on a brushed nickel candlestick in my living room. The candlestick it sits on in the photo will serve as the base of a future pedestal stand of some sort.

Bird books tend to sell quite well.
This one has some fabulous illustrations. I’ll list it for about $15.00.

Isn’t he cute?

Pretty amazing shot.

This photograph is pretty beat up,
but I loved the uniform, so I brought him home with me.

The wicker-wrapped bottle had to come home with me, too, right?

This stained glass window, one of a pair, is the find of the week, probably the find of the month. It, and its twin sister, were leaning up against a wall, when I asked a Salvation Army employee if it was for sale, and if so, how much? She replied, “Do you want it?” To which I responded, “Well maybe, if the price is right.” And she said, “Oh yea, I think the price is right. How’s $1.99?” I wanted to say, “Are you crazy? This is real stained glass!!” But I kept my mouth shut and just quietly took it up to the cash register.
No, I have no idea what I’m going to do with it, but it cost a stinking two bucks (four bucks total). They had to be bought. (Same with the beautiful, oak high chair, which CC Nancy scored at the same time.) If I sold through a bricks and mortar store, I would price this at about $75. I’m not sure how I’m going to sell it. Maybe Craigslist? We’ll see.
That’s what I found. How about you?

  1. Very nice! I hadn't been thrifting in a long time because of busyness but ran over to the local VOA when I got an email from them about their 50% off sale! Got some great stuff that I now have to find time to research and list! No problem as I love the thrill of the hunt!

  2. I am swooning over that stained glass!

The tins full of buttons are like hitting a double – you got buttons AND tins. And such a good price too. Around here, just one of those tins of buttons goes for around $ 15.00 at an estate sale. Ugh.

  3. Lot of nice finds! I thrift all the time, I never find any cool vintage stuff. I do find things I can alter to make new again.!

  4. Oh, I love the Goodwill! I found a really nice —- and really old — school desk/table there about ten years ago. It serves as an end table. You've inspired me to make a visit today. Yesterday I went to an antique shop in Raleigh and bought an old Edison Golden Moulded record canister. They had a bunch of them for $8 apiece. It sits with other old "smalls" on our really old console radio, a find when we bought this farm.

  5. I was scrolling, scrolling, scrolling and I came to the buttons. My envy rose, but by the time I got to the stained glass windows, my jealousy was exploding. Of all the luck! You got a great haul! My Goodwill produced a pair of Vanbriggle mugs about a week ago. The problem is that I can't find much information about them. I don't know how to date them, so I don't know if I have a $10 set or a $100 set! One in a different color sold on ebay the other day for over $50. I suppose I could ask for more than I'm willing to accept and see what happens. I paid 99 cents each, so anything above that would be gravy! Yummy gravy!

  6. Envy you the buttons and great stained glass. Did you keep the s.g? I love old buttons for my doll house creations; jello salads, meringues, cake plates, picture frames, serving trays, candy dishes, ash trays, etc. And some people only use them to hold their clothes together! Well, I have embellished Christmas decorations with them…
