This Week’s Vintage Finds #19

I braved the cold on Saturday to hit a couple of estate sales out in the country. I didn’t uncover a lot, but the sun was out so I could pretend spring is around the corner! Below you will see evidence of the foot or so of snow still on the ground in upstate New York. However, without further ado, here are this week’s vintage finds:

I love how all these tones work so well together–the copper, the wood, the clock face, and the apothecary.

I’m not usually one to go for 1960s metal ware, but this one is copper and hand-hammered (Gregorian Copper)–and of course the price was right. I bought the clock parts–case, gears, and face for projects or for sale, haven’t decided. But as soon as my daughter saw them, she tried to claim them for her own. She’s a real steam punk girl!

This pumpkin-shaped piece is so interesting, and the feel of it, so smooth and the weight of it, so weighty. I’ll stop gushing. Wish I knew what it was. Firstly, I’ll call is some kind of treen, which refers to carved pieces of wood. This one has a pin hole on the bottom where it was stabilized somehow and turned as it was carved. Secondly, I’ll guess that it’s some kind of mold?

This Week's Vintage Finds: Treen

When you pry to two sides apart, this is what the interior looks like. Not much help in discerning its purpose, I know. But those are depressions on each side. Could it be for fancy, round soap? Fancy would explain the amount of time taken with the outer portion of the mold. Any thoughts?

This Week's Vintage Finds: Apothecary Jar with ground lid

I definitely have a thing for apothecary jars. This was a neat size and in perfect shape, so I succumbed to the siren call of the apothecary. I have several in my bathroom already–some holding cotton balls and the like, others empty. I don’t want to clutter up the space too much. We had it remodeled late last winter and I’m hoping to post some pictures soon. I’ve not learned how to photograph indoors very well yet, so that’s the hold-up.

This Week's Vintage Finds: Concrete Bird Bath

Couldn’t pass up the $6 concrete birdbath, could I?

This Week's Vintage Finds: Old Saw Horse

Probably my favorite find–an old, handmade sawhorse for $5. I love the metal brackets holding the legs together, and the top is about 8″ wide, so it could be used as a table. I’m thinking about putting it on my deck this summer. What do you think?

By the way, did you notice the snow? Especially in the shot of the bird bath? Today’s high was 18°with a “real feel” of 2°. Keep in mind that a few years ago, on March 31st (my birthday) it was 83°! Some times ya just gotta smile 🙂
