My Sweet Mother’s Milky Way Cake Recipe
Oh boy! Did I smile the other day as I read your thoughtful comments on my recipe book post. I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and I was taken by surprise by your enthusiasm over my sweet mother’s Milky Way Cake recipe, which she told me originally came from her sister, my Aunt Connie.
In that post, I showed the front of the recipe card as an example of how recipes are kept and sometimes handed down from mother to daughter–on index cards.
I had numerous requests in the comments on the post to “turn the card over” so you could all see the rest of the instructions, and so dear readers, I have done as you asked.
Here is the other side of this “vintage” cake recipe.
And here also is a printable copy of the recipe–consider it an early Easter present from me. Here’s how to print it out: Right click on the recipe, click Save Image As, and save it to your photos.
Then you can insert it into a Microsoft Word document and print it out. To insert a photo or file from your photos into a Word document:
- Click Insert
- Click Picture
- Click From File
- Select Milky Way Cake jpeg file
If you’d prefer to print out a version of my sweet mother’s handwritten recipe, here you go.
If you want to make a note of where it came from, you can write, “Adirondack Girl’s mother, Marge.” Enjoy friends!

Amusing that so many might not even remember index recipe cards. Shows how old I am!!!
My health won’t allow me the luxury of trying this recipe, though it looks like a tasty treat.
Thanks for sharing this…MJ
The world is changing so fast, isn’t it, MJ? If we lived next door to each other, I’d make us a cake to share 🙂 Hope your Easter is blessed!
I grabbed my mother’s recipe books when selling her place after she passed. I love the old ones – such down to earth recipes – and so many ideas of what to do with left overs, etc. I also grabbed her handwritten cards and the two boxes they were in.
One of my favorite books is the Fanny Farmer Cook Book from 1913 I believe, which makes it older than my mom – must have been my Gram’s. I have two others from when I was young and cherish them also. Oh and I am 75 – so they are old. Wonderful things!! Love your emails – look forward to them all the time!!
We must be kindred spirits with our mutual love for these old recipes and cook books Jan 🙂 Thanks for sharing your stories with us and my goodness, you blessed me with your very kind words! I’m so glad you enjoy my email newsletters–
It has everything — chocolate and butter! Thanks for this posting!
Yay! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing that recipe. We are celebrating my youngest daughter’s birthday and she had a special birthday cake request or I would have made this cake for Easter. Have a great Easter. sb
Thanks so much for sharing the recipe. Happy Easter to you!!
I cannot wait to try this. Thanks so much Diana!!
Thanks so much Diana for your cake recipe!,, My hubby loves Milky Ways, so I know it will be a hit. Happy Easter too…..Nettie from Spanish Fork, Ut
I do so love having index cards of recipes from family members, especially ones who have passed. Each time I make my grandmother’s chocolate chip cookies, it is a sweet reminder (no pun intended!) of her. 🙂
Thanks so much, still thing our mother’s may have been cloned….the handwriting especially. Thanks again, Diana, NUM! Sandi
When do you incorporate the melted chocolate bars and butter ? I don’t seem them being added to the cake batter in the recipe. Thank you !!
Thanks for pointing that out. It’s been a while since I’ve made it. I think adding it to the egg.sugar mixture after it’s cooled is the right time. Enjoy!
I had to come back and tell you…..I made this cake today and we loved it! The only thing I did different was bake it in a 13″ x 9″ pan and after it cooled I sprinkled powdered sugar on it. Thanks for sharing! This one is a keeper.
I’m so glad it turned out so well for you Kim!! Thanks for taking the time to come back and let me know 🙂
This sounds delicious! I’m going to try it.
Oh, this sounds SOOOOO good. Won’t do it for home with Al’s diabetes but it’ll be great for church potlucks! Milky Way’s are one of his faves!
