Can Ugly 80’s Wooden Accessories Be Salvaged?
Hi everyone! I hope your week is going well so far. I’ve been busy “nesting” for the past couple of days, cleaning and cooking comfort foods like stuffed pepper soup and Italian ricotta cookies. Yum. I’m also working on clearing out my office of any and all projects. Many of them involve makeovers of old wooden home decor accessories like trays, bread boxes, and various sorts of containers. The average person would probably pass right by these pieces or perhaps use them as kindling. But I, like many of you dear readers, enjoy re-imagining and restoring them to a new, beautiful form, like this pressed wood pedestal frame that recently underwent a necessary makeover.
Yes, today I’m going to answer the question, “Can ugly 1980’s accessories be salvaged?”
I say, “Yes!” But I’ll let you all be the judge of that.
It began with one coat of “Serene” DecoArt Chalk Paint…
Followed by some strategic, light distressing with a sanding sponge…
Topped off by a coat of Minwax paste wax and some buffing with cheesecloth…
Resulting in a vintage-y frame-on-a-pedestal with some shabby chic charm. What do you think? Yea or nay?

Isn’t it amazing what a difference a little bit of paint can make? You clearly salvaged an ugly 1980’s accessory into a very charming photograph frame.
Paint is a wonderful thing! Thanks for the visit, Sharon 🙂
Yeah for me. It has charm and character.
Thanks for the “Yeah” vote, Debra! Have a great day 🙂
I think it is lovely!
it’s a YAY!…very cute—I’ve seen a frame like that, framing wire mesh over fabric for an earring holder…with the necklaces and bracelets draped on the sides…so a double Yay!
Right up my alley…Thankful for paint!
Love it!
Definitely a yea from me. Love it!
No question, the blue is perfect! xo Kathleen
I have one of those which I will probably now be painting!
Looks great. Good Job!!
I love taking something old and ugly and transforming it into something useful. As always, you’ve done a great job!
Diana, this frame looks so cute!! Love that blue! The details on the frame are fantastic! Nice save!!
It’s a yay for sure! I love it!
I say YAY! It’s beautiful! Great job…now if we could just bring parachute pants back, and maybe those mesh gloves! LOL!
Very pretty, Diana!
Oh, I love a pretty make-over. My home is decorated with thrift store finds that have been bought back to a better life 🙂 Your make-over is beautiful!
Have a lovely weekend.
Connie 🙂
What a wonderful transformation. It never ceases to amaze me what a little bit of chalk paint can accomplish.
I say yeah! I have done the same with a couple of wood pieces I’ve found and love the transformation! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
