Vintage Dresser Makeover

Hi everyone! I hope you had a nice week-end. My husband and I were real homebodies, staying warm inside while the temps outside dipped to -12ยบ, not including the wind-chill. We did venture out to share a meal with special friends at one point, and we made it to church, but by Sunday things were a bit warmer. Today I thought I’d “reveal” a makeover I gave a small dresser that I purchased just a couple of weeks ago.

Vintage Black DresserI discovered it in the basement of an estate sale, pretty battered and beat up. I left all the dings and gouges, which are much less noticeable in person than in this photo(!). Something about the bright light and the black paint highlighted these flaws and makes them look like scratches in the finish.

As you can see, it was in rough shape, but still sturdy and the brass Chippendale style drawer pulls were a big plus.

Vintage Black DresserI only had to applyย one coat of Deco Art Americana Chalky Finish Paint in “Carbon”to get all the coverage I needed. Once the paint dried, Iย sanded the edgesย and a few other strategic places (using aย 3M Sanding Sponge) to reveal some of the stained wood underneath. Lastly, I gave it a coat of Minwax Finishing Wax..

I’m pretty pleased with how the underlying stainย shows through the black.

It’s the perfect size for a nightstand, end table, or for storage in a bathroom.ย Eventually, I’ll be bringing it up to my shop, listed at about $99.99.ย Do you all like the black as much as I do?

  1. You are definitely a pro at refinishing.

I thought of you when my daughter showed me a quilt she made from old sweaters. She has featured it on her blog so you should take a look. She also has repurposed sweaters as dresses for her daughter.

She’s the daughter I gave the two serving plates to this Christmas. She used the big one to serve at the birthday dinner for the granddaughter. Nice to see it used. She likes them both.

  2. Ok, I must know – how do you paint when it is so cold out! I have a hutch I am dying to paint but I live in Connecticut!

    Love your blog!

  3. I DO love it, Diana! I have a similarly styled chest which a friend gave me more than a year ago. I also have the same paint, which has been on my shelf for as long! The look you have is very much what I’m after. You make it look super easy.

  4. It turned out great Diana! I think every room can use a little bit of black. Love those drawer pulls!

  5. What a lovely transformation! Over time my, favorite furnishings have been those I gave new life. I’m sure someone will give it a good home at that price!

  9. Very pretty. Also love the dainty batwing pulls — so much cuter than the larger ones you normally see on similar furniture. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I really do like the black and that it looks like the dresser is scratched! Wow, it looks gorgeous! I really pick white tones normally, but this one looks amazing in black! Well done!

  11. It’s beautiful Diana and the original pulls look fabulous with the black paint color. Pinning to share!
