A Vintage Candlebox Makeover
Hi everyone! I hope you had a great weekend 🙂 Ours was supposed to be a total washout, but after a good long downpour on Friday, Saturday was a perfect mix of sun and clouds, perfect, of course for garage saling. We hit a town-wide sale in nearby Melrose (NY) and packed up the van pretty darn well. Come back on Wednesday and I’ll let you see my goods, and of course, as always, I’ll share the price I paid for each item and give you an idea of what I think each is worth. Today I have a pretty project for you, using a vintage candlebox that I bought two weeks ago.
I had a quart of  Sherman Williams “Sporty Blue” that I picked up at the Habitat Restore for two bucks over a year ago. I’m always hesitant to paint projects in anything other than antique white, taupe, gray, or black because those are the colors that sell best in my experience. But this cheerful blue won me over(!).
Do you remember this box? If so, give yourself 25 points! I can’t remember what I bought yesterday, so if you remember this from two weeks ago, bravo, you’re a star. I’m calling it a “candlebox” for lack of a better term. While it’s not shaped like any sort of antique candlebox, it hangs on the wall and it’s made to hold things, so I’m going with it. I’d say it’s from the 70’s and it certainly has seen better days. It needed a refresh.

So I gave it one coat of the Sporty Blue. I usually refer to colors in this family as “French Blue.” My guest room is close to this shade.

Once it dried, I added this simple “No 1” stencil–one of my favorites. I used it on some planters–black on terra cotta, so it had a much different look: How to Age Terra Cotta Pots.
Then I added some faux pink geraniums for a pretty contrast.

It could be a vintage-y wreath replacement on a front door or part of a mantel display. My hopes for it are far less romantic; I plan to use it my antique booth at the Grist Mill to hold paper goods that I have for sale. What would you use it for?

I use my vintage candlebox for candles! Love that color.
I call that blue Military blue or Williamsburg blue. My back door is that color! I prefer this brighter color to the blue gray that some call military blue. Up here in Maine, French blue is an awful BRIGHT blue (lalmost like a blue tarp color) that we tend to use as a derogatory term, (is this postable??) as in, “Boy that house sure is French blue”—a beautiful blue that is a great color for a summer top, accent pillow, etc., but just TOO bright for a house! I never knew it was the name of a “real” color.
Your box looks like an outgoing mailbox to hang in the front hall to me; I guess I’ve never had that many extra candles to store! As a clutterer, it would help keep me organized! I love containers to stick silk flowers in; wall boxes, oddball sugar bowls and creamers, small metal boxes with attached lids, and, of course, baskets.
I had one of those recently & it had a little hook on the front….kind of like a door-knocker, only much smaller & the right scale for the box. Painted it “old white” & sold pretty quick on Etsy. I love yours displayed with the flowers & like the stencil you used.
Love this makeover!! Thanks so much for the inspiration!!

Very sweet! I have always called these napkin holders, but I like candle holder better! Love the paint color and I really like that you didn’t distress it. Sweet and simple.
Well isn’t that so sweet and pretty!!

Nice make-over Dianna. I love the blue. Someone is sure to want to snap it up even if you have papers in it! Just wait and see–someone will want to know how much you want for the blue wall box! So be prepared! And you must tell us if/when this happens! Ha, ha!
You painted the box a very pretty color and I like it with the flowers. Someone will buy it so be on the look out for a replacement 🙂
what a lovely makeover my friend. Pinned!
