Vintage Bench Update With a Grain Sack (& some paint)

I come across vintage benches quite frequently. I’ve purchased several and reupholstered and/or painted them. Today I’m sharing a vintage bench update I gave to a bench I had already updated a while ago. It just wasn’t working anymore.

I like the lighter, more interesting look.

Here’s a before. It really was quite lovely, but a little plain, and the fabric was not the exact right color to go with the accessories in the room. Time for a change.

I thought I might try painting stripes onto a grain sack that I bought at an estate sale last year. As I began looking through the pile, I found this one–with some faded stripes and a [partial] logo. I decided it would be perfect on the bench.

I gave the wooden frame a light sanding, followed by two coats of antique white paint.

I sanded it lightly on all the edges and some of the high spots to distress it a little.

And then applied a coat of clear, paste wax.

I love the grain sack.

And I’m pleased with how it looks in the bathroom.

Such a satisfying little project.

  3. This is just so cute —- what an improvement on the original piece. You really made it special.

  4. Not sure how you manage to do so many projects and sell at the same time! I've painted and recovered a few benches. Love what you did here. I used the exact same feed sack to cover a vintage chair that belonged to my mom. Makes me smile every time I see it:) Happy Thursday.

  7. This look so great. Paint always makes something old look fresh. I recently painted a bench and covered the seat with a coffee bean sack. You can read about it on a pistol I did
    Great job
