This Week’s Vintage Finds #70
Hi everyone! I’m very excited today because my sister and her family, who are missionaries in Uganda, are coming home for a nice long visit. They are due in tonight at 7 pm. But first, a look at my vintage finds–some purchased and some given.
I love the color combo on this book cover and the Art Nouveau design.
I’ve been helping a friend sort through her great-aunt’s belongings. As a thank-you, she has asked me to select a few things to take home with me. These sewing notions are among the things she “gifted” me. The item in the upper right corner is a cute tape measure. I will list these items for sale at about $10-12.00. Acme Notions is an online store selling everything sewing-related. It’s a good place to check out values on various items.
This one dates from about the 1940s, I’d say. Aren’t the graphics terrific?
What’s inside a needle book–needles, of course.
This one’s in pretty rough shape; I liked the military graphics, but it turns out, it’s fairly common.
I’m taken with the typography on this notion. Any idea what bone rings are used for?
This stool turned out to be the only interesting find at an estate sale I drove too far out of the way for. Sigh. Due to the large amount of pencil markings on the top, I plan to stain or paint it, but I’ll leave the legs nice and chippy. I paid $4.00 and will price it at about $15-20.00.
The City Mission (Scotia, NY) is one of my favorite thrift stores because the prices (and sale prices) are always good. Their books cost just $1.00 for three hard-backs or five soft-backs. When I stopped in over the week-end, the various colors of the [mostly] vintage books stood out to me, so I gave into my whim and purchased several based mostly on color(!).
I will likely bring them up to the shop and price them at about $2.00 each.
J.M. Barrie, of course, wrote Peter Pan; this is one of his lesser known novels. Love the cover.
One more look at that gorgeous Art Nouveau cover–
I can’t decide the purpose of this antique basket; it’s so small. It has two long woven handles that are currently wrapped around the top. It had been stored awkwardly and the handles are all bent out of shape. Could it have been a pocket book? I’m just not sure, but I love the alternating thin reeds with the twisted fibers. It’s quite a unique look. This is another of the items gifted to me by my friend.
I love this travel bag because of its wonderful black watch plaid and because it’s so functional. At $2.99 it was a real bargain, though it has some staining on the bottom interior. I plan to add a new bottom made with some fresh, coordinating fabric. If I don’t keep it for myself, I will price it at about $30-35.00.
These bangles aren’t vintage, but somehow they have a vintage vibe. The green and yellow are close to Bakelite colors. I picked them up at a moving sale for $1.00 and plan to keep them, presuming I find something to wear them with.
I haven’t bought or sold a Persian lamb coat in ages, but this perfect condition example could not be passed up. It was languishing in a pile of modern clothing when I rescued it, took it to the check out, and was told I could have it for two dollars. Score! Unusually, it is an extra-large, which you don’t often find in vintage clothing.
Great vintage label. I’m not sure if 1964 is its date of manufacture, but that would seem to be about right.
It has 3/4 sleeves and a nice bit of “swing” at the bottom. The pure white fur (of unknown origin–mink?), is an added bonus, as often one finds plainer brown fur collars and cuffs. My sweet son listed it on eBay for auction, with a Buy It Now of $45.00.
Final item: Another gift for helping with the great-aunt’s estate–a Polaroid Land Camera, Model Automatic 210, first issued in 1967. There’s quite a brisk business in Polaroid cameras on eBay, so my son also listed this item for me. The Film Photography Project has a page about this camera, offering one for sale and also providing a quaint YouTube video of an original television ad. It also gives links to purchase the necessary film and flashes. It’s a great website for all things photography related, especially anything vintage.
That’s it for me.

Bye for now,

Nice, Diana, and I love the Art Nouveau graphics on both the blue and the green books. I found a couple things this past weekend, and am going to Cincy this weekend to join up with my Panoply sisters for the hunt. Enjoy your time with your sister and family.
Great buys Diana! That stool is my favorite. That's too bad that there was nothing else at that estate sale for you.
The Civil War book caught my eye!
Now I want some colorful stacks of books! Lovely finds! I too have driven way too far for not many finds. There is an obligation to find at least one thing! I'd say yours is worth it. Stools are so collectible. The coat reminds me of my grandmother. She had one. I see them once in a while but never sure if there is a market for them around here. So pretty though!
I think that the bone rings may have been used in curtain/drapery construction. The full card will appeal to notions collectors like me
Wonderful finds! The colorful books are my favorite but the Black Watch bag is running a close second.
Diana, these are all simply wonderful. Books! Sewing notions! That stool! You truly scored big time on these things!
I am sure you'll have a blessed and cherished time with your sister and family. Enjoy! Sending blessings as always —– oh, the goodness of God!
Oh Diana what wonderful finds. Love that coat so gorgeous. Love the graphics too on the sewing threader. Too cute.
Kris
My mom used those rings at top of curtains she made. I do remember them!
The books are fabulous! Old books have the best covers! I was so surprised when my son asked for a polaroid when he graduated a few years ago–found one in its original package at an estate sale 😉 Blessings, Cecilia
It's been so much fun "shopping" with you. You found some great finds. Lots of fun 🙂
Great finds!!!! Love the books… They call my name every time. I see they call yours, too!
Diana, you always find the best things. Love all the pretty books. We still have our Polaroid Land Camera. Don't know what model it is, but will check it out. Did not think it was worth anything.
Hugs,
Audrey
The bone rings are probably for making cafe curtains. They were sewn at the top of the curtain, and the rod went through them. I love the old books and the sewing notions. Thank you, as always, for sharing your finds with us.
I never find anything this cool, but I LOVE that camera! Thanks for taking the time to come over and link up with us at the #HomeMattersParty – we hope to see you again next week! Feel free to bring a friend 🙂
The bone rings are for making linen or Dorset buttons as they are known in the UK, usually used on white goods
Somehow I missed this vintage finds post. It is filled with goodies. The coat is Mah-velous! The old books are my favs.
Diana, the books are such fabulous colors. I love them! Might mention that I am trying to collect vintage garden or bird themed books. If you run across any and plan on selling them would you let me know! I have a few needle cards and I love them. All I've ever seen bone rings used for is for making curtains, but I see that Kate might know. You got some really cool ones. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Love the vintage books! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Bliss Tuesdays!
