This Week’s Vintage Finds #56
This poor galvanized bucket has no handle, but for a buck, I had to bring him home with me. Plus, he held my other rusty finds quite nicely. I have plans for the three coal shovels and the dust pan percolating in my head. I think I want to make a Christmas tree with the funnel, along with several others I’ve been picking up along the way (you stack them all up to form a tree). The three rusty pie pans will become pedestal stands some day.
One of the coal shovels has interesting metal work on it. Everything will receive a nice wire brush and oil scrubbing, then a good rubdown with a dust-free cloth. See my post: How To Clean Rusty Metal. They’ll come out good as new (or better than new because they’ll still be aged looking and a bit rusty around the edges).
I’ve noticed on eBay that boxes of ornaments are selling like hot cakes for about $25 a box, so I’m going to give it a try. They’re a bit of a pain to ship since they are so fragile, but I’m going to give it might be worth it. We’ll see. LISTED HERE $24.99.
You might be interested in my article about decorating with Christmas bulbs.
Filled with wonderful illustrations and helpful advice, this pink baby book would make a wonderful shower gift, especially for a vintage-loving girl. I’ll likely list it for about $15.
This 1970 song lyric book is kind of a quirky buy for me, but I think someone will be interested in it. Each song lyric is accompanied by a photo of the band who made it famous, including bands like The Beatles, The Supremes and The Cowsills.
On to a totally different era and style. This darling little purse–kind of a purse within a purse–is comprised of the gold metal portion, which then slides in and out of the black fabric portion.
See? Inside is a compact and a tube of lipstick (empty now). Adjacent to the powder is an empty compartment for other necessaries, perhaps pills? The lid on the back once held a mirror; all that remains is the glue. I’m going to see if my local hardware store can cut me a piece. Behind it is another compartment, perhaps for tissue or cigarettes.
I thought this ornament holder went beyond the typical smooth brass sort that are fairly common. I liked the loop off the back and…
It’s the “Year of the Flower Frog” for me! I’ve purchased almost twenty this year, where in past years it would have been closer to two or three. The more ordinary type of flower frogs usually run somewhere around $10 each.
but I need to do some more research.

Bye for now,

Great, unusual finds as always!! I found a great wooden pub sign with a chauvinist pig on it, a really kitschy wreath that I may keep and a great oak Victorian hat rack all at the local VOA. Can't stop pickin'!
Great buys, AnnMarie–what is a VOA and where do I find one?!!
You always have such interesting finds, Diana! I actually had the cool lyrics book when I was in high school! It was one of those you bought through the Scholastic bookclub in school…little monthly newsprint order forms…I always had to order something! The separating flower frog is very different…and I LOVE the vintage ornaments! My find this week was vintage ornaments, too!
Must be the week for vintage Christmas 🙂 Yes, I loved getting Scholastic books when I was a kid. Still love books–it's a bit of a problem for me…
LOVE that lyric book – very cool.
Are you selling The Pop/Rock Lyrics book? If so what price will you have to have?
Blessings,
Gert
I'll send you an email, Gert. Thanks so much for your interest 🙂
Very nice. I have a few of those dance compacts in my collection, and your price is what I would have expected (if mirror is replaced). The lyrics book is neat, and the graphics on the back remind of the days when I used to make collages with cut out sayings from magazines and hang in my room as a teenager. 🙂 The 3 piece frog is an unusual find, and all the rusty goodness is very similar to one of my sister's primitive stock in our store. I saw the tree made of funnels in blogland, and I really like that idea! I went to a couple estate sales, but am tiring of going right now, with the holidays looming. I don't want to have to store anything more until after the new year, when everything holiday is put away. I'll just shop vicariously through you!
I hear you, Rita. I'll be dying to get out again come February/March, but I'm a bit tired out (doesn't mean I'm going to stop completely!). I still be sharing my weekly finds and supplementing with items I've not featured yet and stock from England that still needs to be unpacked(!).
You got some amazing things! I love that old ship book and the sweet compact purse. AND the Christmas ornies! Great finds! Hugs, Diane
cant beat a xmas tree in a galvanised bucket…….or is it just me
Great idea, Kate!
I love the floral frogs – I've never seen one that comes apart like the one you found.
Don't remember a band call The Associates…could it be The Association? Love seeing your vintage treasures.
You are absolutely right! Thanks so much for pointing it out. Glad you enjoyed the post 🙂
Oh my…I love your rusty treasures and the sweet compact/purse. I have one almost identical to it that belonged to my aunt. Just enough room for the necessities and a dime for a phone call if needed:-)
Love the bulbs! You know, I have never once seen a flower frog in all my travels.
Diana, you always find the most amazing things. I collect flower frogs and have never seen one that comes apart like the one you found. Very unique. Thank you for sharing at The Southern Special.
I forgot to thank you for sharing at The Southern Special. I am featuring this post on my blog this week.
Yea! Thanks so much Sharon–you throw a great party 🙂
I just assembled my funnel tree in my basement kitchen window yesterday. They really are fun! That three piece frog is so unusual. I've never seen anything like it. I have a collection of about 6. Love how versatile they are and fun to use in vignettes. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
The three-part floral frog is quite the find. Looking forward to your funnel tree. Thank you for sharing your finds at Make It Monday.
That purse is awesome. I've never seen anything like it! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Bliss Tuesdays. Jo
Shiny Brites are getting harder to find for a lot of us – great score!!
Pinned your how to clean rust post, it's great! Love the boxes of ornaments too–so LOVELY send me some 🙂
