This Week’s Vintage Finds #28

Hello everyone! I got in lots of “shopping” this week-end; how about you? Friday morning and early afternoon were spent with Constant Companion, Nancy. We hit several garage sales and one estate sale. Saturday morning, I went out on my own to a town-wide garage sale in Altamont, and then met up with my husband later to drive to the Greenwich Antique & Flea Market about 45 minutes north of us. I found some great vintage bargains–wanna see?

Hunting for Vintage Treasure at the Town-wide Garage Sale

Whenever I attend a town-wide sale, I like to hit the sales heading into and out of town because I think they are often ignored by others. And I’m not fighting the crowds like I probably will in town (depending on the popularity of the sale). I might be wrong, but I’ve scored a number of good deals using this method. Like the lantern above–$2.50 at a sale on the town outskirts.

I will eventually get right into the thick of things, but the outskirts have always been good to me. I also found the log candle holders on the left outside of town. I’m trying to build up an “Adirondack-y” inventory and these will fit nicely. The leather-bound book the lantern sits on contains New York’s Education laws. I’m loving the saw in the back ($3): I’m thinking of turning it into a wreath sort of thing. Maybe put a bird’s nest on it and hang it from the front door? What do you think?

Here’s a closer look at the lantern; it has a beautiful blue enamel shade that I just love.
Once I clean this up a bit (using my trusty bottle of mineral oil), I think it’s going to look great.

Garage and Estate Sale Finds

The antique frame in the back is in really nice condition, though a little dried out, nothing a little Howard’s Feed-N-Wax can’t solve. It’s nice and deep and made out of walnut, I believe. The Victorian umbrella is in fairly good condition (for $1 I wasn’t too worried). It has a wooden handle and a nice ruffle that is, unfortunately, unraveling in a few spots. FUN FACT: Did you know the first umbrella (as we know it today) was owned by King Louis the XIII in 1637, and it was for shade, not protection from rain? Who knew? For an interesting little article about umbrella collecting, try Collector’s Corner: Umbrellas, Canes, & Walking Sticks.
Isn’t the tiny gavel cute? I sold a full-sized one recently and had a lot of people interested in it, so I’m anxious to see how this one does. The little pink transfer print dish cost just 25 cents, so I had to bring it home. The vintage alarm clock works! It’s not too old but I think it has a great look.
This Week's Vintage Finds #28 Country Farm Table
I’m still very excited about this great find. Nancy and I walked up the driveway at one of the sales we attended, scanning the various tables set up ahead. We could see right away a number of items that interested us. This country farm table caught my eye. I could see the orange sticker on it but couldn’t believe what I saw–$5! Yep, five dollars for this sweet drop leaf table. You can tell from the underside that it has some good age to it. Unfortunately, someone in the 70s “antiqued” it with that special kit you could buy that involves a gold-ish sort of final coat that’s supposed to make it look aged. My plan is to try out some cool painting method that I’ve not tried on furniture yet. What do you think I should do with it? (Telling you right now, I am not stripping it!)

Flea Market Vintage Finds

I bought all three of these old bottles with the great embossing from the same vendor at the flea market. I think I’m going to offer all three of them in my shop as an “instant collection.” You can read more about old bottles at the Historic Bottle Website. The red ticking is actually a set of 84″ curtains and the red toile is almost two yards long. I think I’ll keep both for crafts and things. All the fabric set me back just $1(!)

This Week's Vintage Finds #28 Country chest

I scored another piece of furniture for almost nothing at the flea market. The seller was so ready to be rid of it, she practically gave it to me. I handed over $2.50 and she handed me a vintage chest. Pretty good deal, right? It’s not real old, but this is another piece that I thought I’d paint, maybe using my Pottery Barn technique? We’ll see.

It’s a very interesting piece–you can see that the front folds down. I’ve no idea what it’s original purpose was. It’s needs a little TLC, some airing out, and of course some paint. What color and technique would you use on it?

This Week's Vintage Finds #28

A few pieces of vintage jewelry, sitting atop a little leather jewelry box. The earrings on the right I’m hoping to use to make one of those cool bracelets you see all over Pinterest. The pearl clip-ons (left) I’ll use for parts and the bracelet in the back I’m going to put a charm on and list in my new Etsy shop (that I’ll tell everyone about soon, when we get closer to the “Grand Opening”). That’s it for me. Now, what did you find this week-end?

If you would like to try out one of the products I mentioned today, you can check them out by clicking on the photos below. If you decide to make a purchase, I will receive a small percentage, which would be a blessing(!). If you do try one of them out, I’d love to hear how you like it.

This week I’m partying at:

  1. Great finds – again! I like your suggested products too, and may invest in those; if so, will definitely go to your link. I'm not sure what colors I'd choose – I always seem to get caught up in the smallest of decisions, but I really like Miss Mustard Seed's colors in chalk paints. Love those fabrics and the pink transferware dish!

    1. Thanks Rita, that's so nice of you. I hear what you're saying–sometimes I get tied up in knots about the smallest decision, then the project languishes and hence "the stockpile!" I love her colors, too. I think I'll check them out.

  2. Love the lantern and the table! Maybe the box was a salesman's presentation box, because of the way it opens, I'm thinking? Thanks so much for sharing this at History & Home this week, take care – Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

  3. Gorgeous finds friend!!! Each one is fantastic! And I love those bottles!!! You really hit the best spots and have such an eye! Wishing you a lovely week! Nicole xoxo

    1. Yes, I can see how that dish is right up your alley ๐Ÿ™‚ I still have loads of pink transfer ware to unpack from our time in England. It's just so darn pretty, isn't it?
