This Week’s Vintage Finds #25

Hey there! This week-end I went out “shopping” for vintage with my husband. No, he’s not one bit interested in the stuff, but he’s a little bit interested in me, which is very sweet. And he’s great a carrying stuff, which he did a lot of. Early Saturday morning we headed out to a nearby estate sale, run by the family, not a dealer, and we hit the mother lode! A very sweet, very Italian woman ran the sale, along with her children and husband. By the time we left, after about an hour of shopping and three trips to the van, she and I hugged goodbye(!).

On the far left is a brass sprinkler attachment for a hose; these are pretty collectible. Next to it you see a fluffy pink Christmas tree. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’ve seen a lot of Christmas. Up close you can tell that it’s all vintage, right from it’s painted terra cotta pot to the white plastic deer glued all over it. Very interesting. I’m calling it the “ballerina Christmas tree.” UPDATE: The brass sprinkler has been listed for sale in my Etsy Shop.

The wire baskets are nice and rusty with some green paint still showing through. Sitting inside them is a light-blue swirl enamel pan, worth about $12. I observed a woman carrying it around in her arms for about an hour, and then she set it down, and I scooped it up. The nice pitcher sitting in the pan is Roseville, but don’t get too excited–it’s been repaired, and rather poorly. I decided to pick it up because I think I can  improve on the repair and it was only $1. At that price it can just be a “shelf piece.”

Here’s a close-up of the enamel pan that I took later in the day. UPDATE: Sold 4/28/14 for $16.99

Here’s a better shot of the planter that all my loot sits on. It’s in really great condition, but it’s original color was a [beautiful] green. I’m thinking I might need to restore it to its former glory. In either color, it’s probably worth about $40-50.

I bought the china poodle for my daughter’s collection. Love the pewter pitcher, and the pressed glass celery jar behind it. The cute little “Made in Japan,” Toby jug needed to come home with me. I’d say he’s worth about $25. Toby jugs are modeled after various characters. I’m not sure who this one is; he looks kind of “Lord Mayor-ish” to me. For more info about these quirky collectibles, check out the Toby Jug Museum.

Here’s a better shot of the pewter pitcher. I’m so tempted to keep it, but no,
I’m going to be a good girl. Today, I will not be a hoarder(!). UPDATE: Sold 4/23/14 for $16.99.

Who can pass up a galvanized watering can? I certainly can’t. They usually sell for about $25-30 each. And see the rope wrapped around it? I’m all focused on rope now with the myriad of nautical ideas on Pinterest. The tray with the linen under glass is just lovely, and will look even better once I’ve cleaned it up. I will price it at about $25-28.

I find that enamelware sells pretty well, so I added this white colander to my pile; it’s filled with miscellaneous goodies. Behind it is a burlap sack and a scythe. In the very front (right) is my big, big find–several boxes of vintage Christmas bulbs and other ornaments. What you see is just a portion; there’s a close-up down below.

The little box of pink Shiny Brites up top is so cute! I’ve never seen a box of all pink. Last November, I sold two boxes this size for $6.95 each. I might price this one higher since it’s all pink. Below the pretty pinks is one of the large boxes of ornaments I purchased. The top row are all 1950s Shiny Brites, same with the first two on the second row. Third one in is 1940’s blown glass in the shape of a house, probably worth about $15. The one right next to it is much older and probably German from the 1890s. It’s got lots of tiny beading around it with three beads (like candles) hanging off of the bead string (one candle is missing).

The first piece on the bottom left is a 1950s plastic Santa, worth about $8. The pine cone blown ornament next to it is nice, worth approximately the same . Next to the pine cone are two spun cotton ornaments in really terrific shape (worth about $10 each), and the last is a 1950-60s tea pot ornament worth about $3-4. Collector’s Weekly has a good article about Christmas Collectibles that you might want to check out. I plan to discus Christmas ornaments in a future Tuesday’s Take on an Antique Treasure post.

I think the $40 I handed over for my finds (23 items) was money well-spent. What do you think?

  1. Wow, Diana! You did great on this pick! The pewter pitcher and enamel pan are my favorite. But I could love a tree decorated with those ornaments, too! Your husband sounds like he'd get along with mine. Call us blessed, Have a great week!

  2. Love your finds! I would want to keep so much of it and be that hoarder I'm trying to avoid…lol!!
The ornaments are fabulous. I have some from my Moms house and they are so special to me. I keep hoping I'll find a watering can like that for myself! Love all the info you share along with your finds!

    1. It's something we all struggle with, isn't it, but you've done so well since you cleared a bunch of stuff out. You're my role model 🙂 My parents divorced and no one knows where the Christmas ornaments went 🙁 I've got a box for each of my kids of ornaments they've received from me or from friends. They'll get them when they set up house some day. Thanks again for all the encouragement!

  3. Nice haul for one stop!! I love the variety that you got! There's a barn nearby that has fabulous sales that I fill the back of my SUV up with great stuff every time I go. Thanks for stopping by my blog….I live in Upstate NY in Palmyra, a small town in the Finger Lakes. We have great stuff around here to pick and it looks like you do too!

  4. Wow great finds. Your really did well for your money spent. I am still hobbling around on crutches so can't make it to garage/estate sales just yet. AM so envious.
