This Week’s Vintage Finds #142
Hi everyone! I hopeĀ you had a great Labor Day week-end. Mine was pretty great. I spent Friday with my sweet friend Nancy and Saturday with my sweet husband. Sunday and Monday were spent with family. Friday Nancy and I shopped until we literally dropped. The final three hours were spent at a church sale out in the country where she lives, and it was a picker’s dream. I bought four large boxes of good “junk,” along with several larger items, like an amazing chalkboard. I’ll let you know below which items came from that sale. I’ll be rolling those buys out over the next couple of weeks as I unpack them. Saturday we strolled the streets of Catskill, a local town, and enjoyed their current display of arty cats that line the streets. Part of a fund raiser for the arts, the cats have been turned into pieces of art by local artists. I’ll share it all in a post soon. For now, let’s take a look at some vintage finds.
My sweet friend found this large vintage chalkboard for me at the amazing church sale (cost: 75Ā¢, value: $40-45.00). It measures about 3’x 2 1/2′ and I’m sorely tempted to keep it. If I can’t get the oily looking stain out of the corner then I may have to repaint it.
The wonderful vintage lettering is pretty amazing.

Back in the corner of the huge cafeteria, where much of the sale was being held, I found a stack of framed artwork, each piece priced at $2.00. Most that I picked out were low-quality prints that had great frames that I can repurpose. This piece I chose for the wonderful artwork.

It’s paper collage with reverse ink-on-glass outlines, by Sister Marion C. Honors, a local nun who has created some stunning creation-inspired artwork. She has two art masters, one from Notre Dame and the other a university in Italy (cost: $2.00, value: $100-200.00).
This large old frame was a real bargain from a different sale, but I actually bought it because I liked the back.

I’m sure I’ll do something with the frame, but look at this three-paneled backer board(!). The beautifully aged and oxidized wood will make the perfect back-drop for something. I don’t know what yet, but three old prints, perhaps (cost: $2.00, value: for parts).
I really liked the smaller size of this crate and the typography on the side (cost: $5.00, value: $18-25.00). It came from an annual sale held by a local dealer (hence the slightly higher price).
For the moment this little flower box is staying with me (cost: $3.00).
When I first bought this red basket at the antique dealer’s sale, I thought it had some good age to it, but now I’m fairly sure that originally it was unpainted. I don’t think the paint is new, but it’s likely not original. It’s also missing a lid (cost: $5.00, value: $20.00, if original paint: $45-50.00). (SOLD)

These two old pieces (from the church sale) look pretty great and I haven’t even cleaned or oiled them yet (cost: 25Ā¢ each, value: $6-8.00).
I’m pretty pleased with this old galvanized sieve (cost: $5.00, value: $35-40.00). The big metal hook on top would be a great place to hang a larger wreath, right? This was my final purchase from the dealer.
This cast iron trivet (new or old?) would make a great addition to a gallery wall (cost: $1.00, value: $8-10.00). (SOLD)
A couple of years ago, I did a post on vintage trivets.
From the church sale–an Atlas E-Z Seal (cost: 25Ā¢, value: $5.00).

Also from the church sale–an ironstone utensil holder (cost: 25Ā¢, value: $10.00). This particular container type and shape doesn’t say “vintage or antique” to me, and there’s no mark on the bottom, but it would make a great addition to a farmhouse kitchen nonetheless. (SOLD)
This pair screams 1960’s and I think they’re pretty fabulous (cost: 50Ā¢ each, value: $15-18.00 each).

Final Find: This is my second Pyrex glass pitcher, and I think I’m falling in love (cost: $1.00, value: $15-18.00). At 2 liters, it’s a handy size. [Signed “Pyrex” on the side, near the bottom.]

Well done. You find such nice things. The artwork by the local nun is beautiful and what an interesting technique.
I think the trivet is from Dansk, there is a pair on EBay (2 for $49).
Some truly wonderful finds, Diana! I hit the jackpot myself this weekend. I just have to get it all unloaded from my van and photographed. š
Fantastic finds this week Diana. Sounds like you had wonderful weekend.
The artwork you found is amazing! A true treasure for sure. I cannot believe the prices you paid for some of your wonderful finds. That awesome chalkboard for 75 cents! What? I wanna go shopping with you!
Really neat variety of items! Some made me say “awww” and some made me laugh. Hard to pick a favorite. Will look to see what you do with the one interesting picture frame. Glad you had a good time!
Wow, I like ’em all! Great finds. Wish I’d found some sales to go to.
What great stuff, esp that chalkboard! I wouldn’t repaint it, I’d leave it “as is” warts and all! Makes it that much more authentic. Wish I had some of those country sales near me ha! xoKathleen Charm Bracelet Diva {At Home}
You did get some pretty great finds this past weekend. It is really hard to pick just one so I will say I love it all.
I love the trivet and the sieve! The planter box is lovely, too. Great finds. I look forward to your shopping trips!
Sr. Marion’s art is my favorite, closely followed by the wood frame, and crate. Your shop-til-you-drop day was very productive. David, Michael and I are heading to be big estate sale tomorrow. You know it’s serious when the 3 of us go. We have a plan . . .
Diana, You found some lovely stuff. I love the juice citrus pitcher, the black metal trivet, and red flower box. I keep an eye out of good frames as well. Sylvia D.
Great finds, Diana! The artwork is amazing, good eye! Wondering if you ever researched any more about an e commerce site and how it worked out for you? Hope all is well and that you had a great summer!
