This Week’s Vintage Finds #139
Hi everyone! Did you catch yesterday’s post about my “cool” cocktail ring collection? It’s pretty fun, so you might want to check it out. I mentioned in it that I made some big purchases at the Gristmill Antique Center (where I have a booth) and at Goodwill over the week-end. You came to the right place if you would like to see my vintage finds 🙂
Are you in love? As soon as I set eyes on this old wooden bucket, it was love at first sight. In fact, as I set it on the counter to make my purchase, I gave it a little hug, just so it would know that it was loved and would be coming home with me. I have no idea what it’s meant for–too tall and narrow for ice cream (I think). It’s a mystery. I’m going to clean it up a bit and then decide how to fit it in with my home decor (cost: $20.00–I know, way more than I usually spend, value: $55-65.00?).
I was so pleased when I discovered this planter at Goodwill (and the price pleased me even more!). I just love the acanthus leaf decoration on the sides and am contemplating aging the exterior with some watery, off-white paint, using the same process I used in my post about aging terra cotta pots. I plan to use it on my deck (cost: $9.99).
These two cane-backed captain’s chairs were my second great find at Goodwill on Friday. [Yes, you’re seeing double. I was pressed for time and photographed just one of the chairs.] They are nice quality and quite clean (cost: $14.99 each–I know, I spent a lot of money this week-end). I’m planning a paint and upholstery make-over that I hope will transform them into the perfect chairs for my eat-in kitchen table (the one I’ve been working on for about a year now–lol). My dilemma: I painted the top of the table black and the legs antique white, so what color should I paint the chairs? Black or off-white? I’m thinking of going with a grain sack seat with red striping. What do you think?
Thanks so much for stopping by!

Our vintage link party opens Thursdays at 8 am–
Oh, I completely understand hugging that lovely green bucket. I agree it looks too tall for ice cream but it is so gorgeous. Goodwill was good to you. The terracotta planter and the chairs are great finds.
So nice to have a kindred spirit in a blogging friend, Sharon 🙂 I agree, GOODwill was GOOD to me!
good thing you have a big car. can’t wait to see the chairs transformed. you will put a pic up, before and after won’t you? it would SOOO inspire me. love your writing
LOL! Yes, I will definitely do a before and after shot of those great chairs–I would LOVE to inspire you, Bev 🙂 You are a sweetheart!
Your bucket could be a sap bucket! I had good luck with the three I bought in May. They’re all gone already – and in the price range you quoted is what I sold mine for.
They certainly are the right shape. Thanks for letting me know I’m in the right price range, Melissa, that’s very helpful 🙂
Great price on the chairs! My favs are the green bucket & planter…that will look great with a whitewash on it!
Thanks so much for the confirmations, Florence 🙂
Great finds. What happens when you live in the right place!
The chairs are quite stunning, but want to warn you, unless you have lots of room around the table the arms might just drive you nuts. My chairs with arms won’t it snuggly around the table when not in use. B/c the arms are a tiny bit too high. I’ m going to enjoy seeing these finished. There are 2 chairs in my storage stack that I can’t bring myself to paint. Maybe what you do will help me decide once and for all.
Thanks for sharing your loot…..lots of fun seeing it all…..

You make a good point about the chairs, MJ. We are currently learning whether we live with them, as they do stick out a bit farther than the previous pair. I want to make it work because I love them!
Nice finds and I vote to paint the chairs off white so the red stripes on the cushions will stand out nicely. Plus it will keep things bright in the room where they will be used. Just my 2 cents worth.
Have a blessed day!
SallyAnn
Thanks for the suggestions, Sally Ann–I’m definitely leaning toward off-white. I appreciate you taking the time to put in your 2 cents worth; it’s much appreciated 🙂
Diana, I think I would go with a white or off-white on the chairs. Black would be too much dark, I think. The grain sack wih red stripe would look good, too. Do you have other red things in the area where these will be used? Just thinking that picking up that color, maybe in a table runner or something on the wall would help to tie in the red in the grain sack seats.
You made some good purchases on your shopping trek. My favorite is the terracotta planter. I remember your post about aging terracotta pots and I think doing that to the planter will make it look really good. The leaves will stand out more then.
Looks like a consensus is building in favor of off-white, Naomi. Yes, I do have red in my kitchen–it’s the accent color. I’ve a red garland around a pewter chandelier, a red “Kitchen” sign, and red towels hanging on the oven. And I also have a new runner with red grain sack stripes on it that’s pretty awesome. Oh, and I agree with you about the white wash making the leaves stand out on the planter…now to just find some time(!).
Glad the red-striped grain sack cloth will fit in perfectly with your other red accents. Finding time to be creative is a perennial problem for me. So much going on–grandkids, birthdays, holidays–sometimes I just want to opt out of everything and create alone for about six months! Wouldn’t that be heaven? For me it would; I’m a bit of a recluse at heart!
Diana … you find the neatest things. Beautiful chairs and I just love the old wooden bucket. That color is great. I do think it is an ice cream bucket because use of salt would cause the whitish residue and rusted metal. Also, the small metal clip piece by the handle and the grove on the other side would have held the crank and the metal can. May be a Six quart. Thanks for sharing your finds. I especially like that you give cost and estimate the value.
Hugs,
Audrey Z.
Hi Audrey! Thanks for the input on the bucket–I think you may be right! So glad you enjoy my vintage finds posts 🙂
That green wooden bucket is awesome! What a great find. Such a pretty shade of green. I recently bought two chairs similar to yours but I haven’t decided what to do with them yet. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours. Kathy
I know, I’m in love with that beautiful green bucket! I’m leaning toward the off-white with the red grain stripe–we’ll see…
I went to check on my booths a couple of days ago and was so surprised at what I saw…. a green bucket very similar to yours. The lady told me that she had had in her she’d for a long time and finally decided to bring it to the shop. And hers is an ice cream maker. I will post a picture of it on my Instagram.
Can’t go wrong with grain sack anything! I love that bucket, what a great find! Happy dance there for sure:) xoKathleen Charm Bracelet Diva {At Home}
LOL–you’re right Kathleen! It was a nice “sweep” of finds, for sure 🙂
I really like the terra cotta planter but that green bucket is a great find. The chairs have so many possiblities. You got a great haul.
Thanks Debra! Appreciate the kinds words 🙂
Oh you did have some great finds! That bucket is a beauty! And I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with those beautiful chairs!
Good to hear from you, Linda! Thanks for the encouragement 🙂
Nice finds as usual. I’m thinking a stripe or print toile for the chairs. When in doubt I paint white.
Thanks so much Lee, sweet of you to say 🙂
Diana, can’t wait to see the completed table and chairs. I vote for white chairs….
Hoping to get to that project soon–looks like we’re all leaning toward white!
I own the same acanthus planter…bought it new years ago…I painted mine French Blue along with all my other clay pots and have them on shelves in front of my shed….and the cane chairs…i think they should match the legs of the table….that’s what i did for my daughter…legs and chair backs match. I love Goodwill…..I go several times a week…..I do hate to post my finds and get too much competition in my little town, tho…;) I have seriously thought about it tho because I have found some real treasures….Most recently….Last week I bought an American Fostoria punch bowl with the stand and the ladle…..it matches my daughter’s American Fostoria collection….$300.00 value for $30.00 …… shhhhhh Great post!
Such a small world! I bet the French blue on the planter looks lovely. Table legs should match the chair–good rule to know; thanks for passing it on 🙂 Your Fostoria punch bowl buy is AMAZING! The larger pieces, including the cake plate have really retained their value and are stunning pieces to boot. Congrats on a great purchase–
I would be giddy if I found an old wooden bucket!
Thanks for sharing with SYC.
What did you end up using your green bucket for: I’m voting for a waste basket or a container for your yardstick collection!! In your spare time (!!!) could you add a picture of the refinished chairs? I love the above comment about toile–a red and cream/off white. Like a Joanne’s 40% off coupon or their upholstery cloth sales would make it doable–prob just over 1/2 yard caz it is so wide! Kinda French country! And Scotchgard the heck out of them! If your table isn’t high enough, could you add ball feet /blocks of some type to the bottom of your table legs to make them 1-1 /1/2″ higher? Don’t tell anyone and they won’t even notice! Deviousity CAN be a good thing!
