This Week’s Vintage Finds #100
Hi everyone! Today marks my 100th Vintage Finds post–whoo whee! Pretty amazing. I’ve been documenting my finds for almost two years straight. That’s a lot of junk fabulous vintage and antique stuff. What with our new link party starting this past Thursday and life going on as normal (high speed), I didn’t pull together a give-away for this week, but I’m going to announce one next week at Vintage Finds #101. And since I kinda blew it, I’m going to have two give aways–one vintage and one hand-crafted.
I’ll start off this week with a few more of the free items I scored at a large estate sale last week-end: some interesting odds and ends that I’ll save for some vintage-y projects.

These square head nails were also among the free items. I bought a mayonnaise jar full of (smaller) square head nails a while ago for a dollar and sold them a baker’s dozen at a time for $4.99. I sold 15 packets total, netting $75.00.

I’ve read about smelling salts and seen them in movies, but I’ve never held a bottle in my hand. This quaint little gem, made by Yardley, was also free (value: $8-10.00).

More free: some sewing supplies with attractive graphics. I’ll be using these for a shadow box I have planned with a sewing theme. Laurel Leaf Farm has loads of vintage sewing notions for sale, which are both fun to look at and helpful for pricing your own goods.

Also free: a wooden peg game (value: $10-12.00), vintage ski wax ($4-5.00), and a watercolor set ($6-8.00).

The side of the peg game, which is a little warped, has an opening where the pegs are kept.

Every one of the 32 pegs is present and accounted for.

This 8″ statue–another freebie–bears some knicks and chips, but was too darling to pass up.

I came home with several, small fur scraps that delighted my sweet daughter, but this little animal head gave her the heebie jeebies (cost: free, value: $5.00).

This pair of fabulous posturing roosters came home with us from England in 2011. I have been slowly divesting myself of my rooster collection, and these guys are now for sale (cost: 3£ or $4.50, value: $35-40.00).

I typically buy clocks and radios for my daughter, but she has so many now, I think I’m going to see how salable they are in my shop (cost: $1.00, value: $10.00?). The eBay Guide, What You Need to Know Before Collecting Vintage Radios, provides in depth info on radio collecting–worth a look.

This pretty pink quilt top (full size) shows some wear, but is in great shape for crafting. It contains over 20, good condition pink blocks and almost 30 of the white, and is all hand-sewn (cost: $2.00, value: $40.00, as is).

Here’s a closer look at the patches. Check out Quilt Collecting Advice From the Experts for some interesting insights.

Small shelves like this make great displays in an antique booth, so I pick them up whenever I see them (cost: $4.00, value: $15-20.00).

Final Find: I just love the look of these small books with their black spines and kraft paper-colored covers (cost: 75¢ each, value: $8-10.00).

The graphic on the cover of this one is lovely; it dates to 1887.

The inside is rather plain, no illustrations.

The hymn books are about 4″ high and date to 1868.

The writing is miniscule. I’m not sure how anyone could read and sing at the same time!
I’ve got plenty more free stuff to show you next week and a couple of pieces of small furniture still in the back of my van. I hope you’ll come back next Tuesday to see more of my vintage finds.
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I love stopping by to visit, Diana! Even though I’ve gotten rid of lots of my accumulations, I still love the thrill of the hunt and reading about what others are collecting. Your weekly finds are always so cool. We’d have a good time garage-saleing together!
I hear you about that animal head. Just too weird!!
;-}
Love the mint green shelf!
Oh! I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite in these wonderful finds!!!
You always have such great finds, Diana…my favorites this week are the quilt and the watercolor set…
You found some great pieces, Diana. Even better that they were so inexpensive or even free.
Know what I love best of your vintage finds (besides the quilt top, the green cubby, and the roosters)? I love the fact that you still have junk in your trunk – makes me feel in good company. 😉
Looking at all your wonderful finds makes me want to go junking. Interesting reading in that you put resale values on what you buy. Would be great to find a sale with that much FREE stuff. I had a lady come to my garage sale and said she was only shopping for “free stuff”, and that was all she “bought”.
I am amazed at the incredible vintage stuff you find, let alone for free! I think I need to move….I absolutely love those books!xoKathleen
Congratulations on reaching 100!! Posts that is…. hahaha I wish I could still go to estate sales, I always loved looking at what others had accumulated. I would gladly give you $5.00 for the quilt, as is, that’s a quick $3.00 profit! j/k You always share the most interesting finds, thank you.
I love those hymn books! I found some a few years ago and have used them for a few projects. Congrats on getting to 100. That is a lot of shopping! But so much fun!
Wow Diana, what a profit on those nails! I have never seen anything free at an estate sale. What a bunch of scores! Love the books! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful post with Flea Market Friday! I will be featuring it in a little bit when this weeks party starts! xxx….Brooke
You are so right about shelves. Just cannot have too many. You may have found the most awesome free box in the history of junking! I love old hymnals and song books. The ones you got are too cool.
I’ve gotten a few free things over the years; notably a “dead” stereo in unfashionable cherry/mahogany veneer. Should seen me trying to load it alone into my little station wagon! Ripped out the radio and started making a vignette of Irish partiers…never finished. Store craft stuff where the records should be. And it is my front hall table! Would love to rip out the speaker and use the bars to front 2 shelves….someday. I also got a (cemetery) cement urn with only 1 chip on the bottom that graces my yard! Never finds like yours!
The first thing I read when I open by inbox are your posts – love them! The way they are written, I feel like we’re friends….but I guess I have to move. In my neck of the words, I never find items priced like yours – most of the garage and estate sales don’t have anything less than $2-$5 – you get great finds for 50 centers. I’m so jealous!!
Congrats on your 100th blog — looking forward to the next 100!
