Side Table Makeover 1-2-3

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great week-end. I did some garage saling on Friday and laid pretty low on Saturday. Went out to dinner with friends to celebrate my sweet husband’s birthday. Then we enjoyed another birthday meal earlier today with the kids at Samurai, a Japanese hibachi place. Lucky guy. Tomorrow I’ll share Friday’s finds with you, but today I’ve got a simple furniture makeover for you.

I’ve already brought it up to my booth, priced at $38.00.

I bought it not too long ago at a garage sale where the sellers had it marked $5.00. When I asked could they do any better, they replied $3.50. Sold! Dating to about the 1930s or 40s, it’s very light-weight and not particularly attractive. It sorely needed some DIY love and I knew just how I wanted to handle it.

My 1-2-3 approach was spray paint, distressing, and wax. The paint really brought out the scalloped, pie-crust-type edging, especially when distressed.

I went with Rust-Oleum’s 2X in Fossil, with a satin finish. It needed only one coat, followed by several spritzes to cover areas I hadn’t sprayed heavily enough the first time.

The next day I distressed all the high points with a sanding sponge.
I followed the distressing up with a coat of Minwax paste wax, buffed it, and the project was done. Easy as 1-2-3. (Be sure to wipe off any dust created while sanding, prior to applying the wax.)

  1. Hello Diana,
So nice to meet you on my blog. I'm glad that you are a follower of Donna's. She inspires me to keep hunting for more treasures. I love your table and I usually don't use spray paint but I think the table turned out great. I'm sure the wax helps give it a nice patina. I might have to look at spray paint in a new light! I signed up for your blog with email. I look forward to reading your posts.
    hugs,
    Sissie

  2. Great job, Diana. I love your simplistic approach to projects and making things look so good. Happy Birthday to your hubby. And when I read the first line, I had to do a double take. My eyes interpreted it as "garbage saling", lol. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, right??

  3. Fossil is one of my favorite colors. Great job on distressing the scalloped edges. I was going to ask what AnnMarie did – have you tried Krylon Chalky Finish in a spray can? I painted all weekend with it. Love it. Pinning and sharing the table.

  4. Great paint job! The table looks somewhat like end tables my parents had when I was growing up. Looks much better now!

  7. Love this table – and isn't that spray paint the best?? Are you still in NY? I am in the Syracuse area! I am sure this table will sell quickly, especially at that price, it's a steal!! Well done.

  8. I love how it turned out Diana! I bet it sells quickly at that price. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
