A Project Do-Over: Simple Blessings Hanging Rack
Hi there! Have you ever finished up a project and thought, “That did not turn out the way I expected”? It happens to me every now and again (maybe a bit more than that, if I’m being honest!).
So today’s project is a do-over of a previous DIY that I was never completely satisfied with: A Vintage License Plate DIY for the Man Cave. In it’s new life, it has become a “Simple Blessings Hanging Rack.”

It was really just a matter of a bit of paint and a beautiful new stencil.
So off came the license plate (SOLD), off came the Budweiser frame (SOLD), and off came the Moulson bottle opener (available), leaving behind an old pine board and some antique hooks.
Here they are before I put them together.
After removing all of the decorations, I had pretty much of a blank slate to work with. I decided to go simple and just dry brush it with one thin coat of DecoArt’s Americana “Charcoal” chalky paint. [Thank you DecoArt for the paint!]
Then, I applied a brand new stencil, “Simple Blessings,” from Scrappin’ Along (not an affiliate).
I have to say I am much more pleased with these results than with the last.
It can hold hats, coats, scarves, or primitive/farmhouse decorations, like this berry wreath and metal star.
I hung a few of my favorite things, but it could be styled in many different ways. You could hang aprons, pots/pans, kitchen utensils, or garden tools. What would you hang on it?
It’s now available for sale in my booth at the Gristmill Antique Center in Troy (NY) for somewhere in the $28-35.00 ball park. My old mind can’t remember how I priced it exactly. Having the hooks attached definitely makes it more utilitarian and therefore more attractive to potential buyers. We’ll see how it goes…

Its amazing how we know our projects aren’t just right. Your makeover is perfect!
Love the update! The previous board wasn’t bad, just not as graphically pleasing as the new version! I really like the stencils at Scrapping Along. I have ordered a few on your recommendation. Thanks for the Friday morning inspiration.
Although i loved the man cave sign, I can see this will reach many others. The old coat rack hooks are my favorites. I always buy hooks of any kind when I see them reasonably priced at garage sales and thrift stores but the best deal I ever got was 12 of these very hooks for a quarter at a yard sale. I have my project in mind with all of the items needed except the stencil. This one may be just what I was looking for.
As to what I would hang on mine…probably just what you have pictured! This would give me one more place to display some of my collections that I have no place for.
Again you have inspired me! Thanks Diana.
I love the board. Great re-inventing! And an uh oh from me — I’m subscribed to your emails but darn it I forgot the password. Would you share again please and thanks!
I think the way you styled it is perfect for a farmhouse /vintage vibe. I don’t have wall space to hang it but I think it’d be great with red/green handled kitchen utensils, even a sifter (which I don’t even collect! It would be great for mugs in a coffee station. Small brimmed vintage hats or purses. Men’s baseball caps. Christmas stockings for grands! Style it for whatever holiday is current with a small wreathe in the center.
You did a great job! Another well done project! You can also recycle that license plate, put it on the roof of a bird house!!
Yes, I like it better now, too. Maybe just because I relate to the new items more the ones you used previously. But I think it will appeal to more people, too. Thanks for showing your re-do. Sometimes you just have to start over!
I love the makeover! It’s nice to sell off the old and bring in the new!
I wanted to add my name to your wood salve order list but it was already up to 15. Please put my name on your next list or if you expand your current order. Thanks
