Gracie’s Vintage Finds #2
A couple of day ago, I told you about some of the finds my daughter scored during our week-end extravaganza of garage saling together. Today, I thought I’d share with you some of the rest of her purchases.
On Saturday, we attended one estate sale, put on by House of Rose Antiques. I’ve known the owner, Nancy, for quite a few years. As Gracie and I were shopping, I mentioned to Nancy that Gracie was kind of in training. This leather briefcase had an $8 tag on it. I suggested to Gracie that she ask Nancy if she could have it for $7. Nancy said, “Yes, but normally, I would not lower my prices on the first day of a sale. But since you’re in training, you can have it for $7.”
Then, when the time came to price several of Gracie’s small items, she told her she could have them all for free, since she was in training! Isn’t that sweet? Small kindnesses like that can really make your day, can’t they?
You may be wondering what Gracie plans to do with this vintage briefcase. Well, she likes to have her own style, and she’s thinking this briefcase will be much cooler than a plain, old backpack. She wants to give it a try anyway.
It’s a little musty inside, so we’re going to wipe it down and then sprinkle it liberally with baking soda and let it sit for a week or so. Then we’ll vacuum it out and see if it needs another application of baking soda. Nice that it came with the key.
I got a lot of, “What’s this?” throughout the week-end. Gracie learned a lot about a lot of different things as we shopped together. She had no experience with incense but found the incense burner (above) interesting, so for a quarter, she snatched it up. She was also quite taken with this old Avon bottle shaped like a gun.
We don’t know what the thing on top is, but it’s very sword-like and that was enough to capture Gracie’s attention. At fifty cents, the vintage watch on the left came home with her, along with the three old key replicas, and the verdigris-covered keys on the bottom. She found the mini scope very intriguing, so that was a must-have at $5, and the small sword on the far right is actually a letter opener(!). This was her very first buy on Friday ($1) and she fell instantly in love.
Once again I’m thinking she did pretty great–she must have some good genes 🙂

Gracie did great – I love that scope! A couple ideas for you on the briefcase and keys – try cat litter in to get rid of the musty smell (place inside, leave a few days, empty). For the keys, I've used Evapo rust (Lowe's) for soaking – it works, and is non-toxic!

It is so much fun to see what is catching her eye and what she bought! Fun finds. Great job for a 'trainee'!!
I wish I had a trainee, but the tribe just view my finds with horror then pinch anything they can think of a use for…lol
When I was in school, I would have loved a locking briefcase. I loved my school supplies & writing letters & my diary. Hope it cleans up nicely. She has a good eye!
Oh, how fun! I love the briefcase – wouldn't it be nice to know its history? Lucky gal, your Gracie, to have you for a mom/mentor! Cindy from TheCranesNest.com
Looks like a great haul….that top thingy…looks like something they would use to make rings…or something electrical….the mini scope is cool…I would use to check out bugs and stuff when I take nature walks….looks like the good "junk" genes spilled down to her! Great job!
What a varied assortment of interesting things! Is the "top thing" kind of rough? My uncle used to be a woodworker and I feel like he used a tool similar to this in order to sand the inside of curved pieces of wood.
or not sand but smooth prior to sanding
What fun and what great finds
Gracie has a great eye! Love the keys and the Flashfun camera from the other post. Thanks for sharing this at History & Home this week, take care: Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com
Fun finds and she definitely has a good eye! Love the keys.
The sword like object looks like a knife sharpening steel. My grandfather was a butcher and he sharpened his knives using one of those.
Your daughter has great taste!! Thanks for sharing @ TTF!
Incredible finds – love her taste! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
Did the musty smell come out of her briefcase? I had tried charcoal brickettes and baking soda on a musty commode once; no luck. Then I threw in a bag of cedar shavings–just the closed bag–today I would have scattered them–left them for a couple of weeks and the smell was gone. I’ve put drier sheets in old musty books with good results too.
