Farmhouse Style Milk Sign

Hi everyone! I hope you had a great week-end. I attended my first garage sale of the season on Saturday, and it was a good one! I happened upon it as I was returning to an estate sale I had shopped at on Friday. I will have a full post tomorrow with all of my vintage finds. But today I have another vintage-y sign for you. I’ve had tremendous luck this year picking up batches of old wood–planks, old fencing, and some larger hunks. I decided I wanted to make a farmhouse style sign with a red background, and here it is.

Vintage Farmhouse Milk SignUsing a few simple tools and supplies, it didn’t take me long at all.

Vintage Scrap wood
Remember this bunch? I rescued these pieces from the basement of an estate sale I attended a couple of months ago.

I made a sign with the larger black piece
not too long ago. I stenciled it with the word “Gather.”
You can buy it here.

Rim of Milk Sign painted white
First, I painted the trim white, using some acrylic craft paint I had on hand. [See Amazon affiliate links below for supplies you might need.]

Letter M against red paint with white trim

Then I painted the background apple red, again using acrylic craft paint. I used a dry brush and made sure I didn’t cover the wood completely. I sanded the edges of the white trim and lightly sanded the red surface as well.

Using some letter stencils I had on hand, I spelled out “MILK” using the same white paint I used for the trim and a makeup sponge applicator. Once it dried, I gave it a coat of Johnson’s paste wax, let it sit for about ten minutes, and then buffed it up.

I posted a tutorial about how to make your own stencils,
that might help, if you don’t have any letter stencils & would like to make some.

Vintage Farmhouse Milk SignI attached a hanger to the back and she was done, available today as a FLASH SALE for $18.99, or in my shop as of tomorrow, April 12th for $24.99.

  1. Love that pop of red! I have a similar piece of wood that I’ve been sitting on because I can’t decided what to do with it. Yours is a good idea for it! xo Kathleen Charm Bracelet Diva {At Home}

  2. Morning Diana! Love your milk sign. What grade sandpaper did you use to distress it? I just painted my seed bin and found it very difficult (or am I just out of shape?) to sand the paint away. I also enjoyed your Vintage Finds this week. Hugs from Colorado!

  3. Really nice sign Diana. Love the red. I am really anxious to get back to making things and blogging again. I have a lot of new stencils that need to be used and an old piece of fence that I took down that is just begging for some paint. Finally after four months steady work, we are putting the finishing touches on the rental house we are selling. We have a contract on it now and hope everything goes smoothly with appraisals, inspection and loan. Thanks for hosting Vintage Charm. So much inspiration.

  4. I love your sign – anything red!

You just reminded me that I need to go back out to the garage and finish a sign I started this morning.

    Thanks for sharing at SYC.

  5. Of course I love it! Anything red always makes me happy. Thanks for sharing it with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
