This Week’s Vintage Finds #93

Hi everyone! I’m busy preparing for a family trip to Pittsburgh to celebrate my in-laws 60th wedding anniversary (amazing I know). I’ve been working hard to write posts and take photographs so you [hopefully] won’t even notice I’m gone. In order to do that, I’ll be sharing half of this week’s vintage finds today and the other half next week.

crocodile head
This is a bit of a quirky item, I know, but bits of natural history sell quite well–items like shells, coral, minerals, skeletons, deer heads, and antlers. I admit, this is my first crocodile (alligator?) head, and I was very excited to find it (cost: $1.00, value: $20-25.00). Funny story. I heard our dog Xander crunching on something in the other room recently. Knowing I had not given him anything to eat, I rushed in, only to find him crunching on my precious alligator head(!). I won’t go into all the details regarding what I had to go through to get him to drop it, but eventually he did, but not before he had gnawed off a couple of teeth. Sigh. It had not occured to me that I would need to protect my new find from my old dog.

vintage ceramic deer
How about some sweet deer after that almost too-real crocodile? I’ll use these cuties for some Christmas decorating (cost: $1.00/3).

base of vintage ceramic deer
The two on the right are unmarked, the one on the left is marked “Japan” (above) and probably dates to about the late 1930s.

vintage plastic flower frog
Even thought this “Gadjo” plastic flower frog isn’t particularly attractive, I bought it because serious flower frog collectors will probably be interested in it, particularly since it’s in the original box (cost: 50 cents, value: $12.00).

vintage plastic flower frog
Can you [just barely] see the green suction cup that adheres it to the bottom of the vase?

vintage shoe polish
I’m attracted to almost any kind of glass dresser jars, even those containing shoe polish. The two on the right come in the pretty pink box (cost: $1.00, value: $12.00) and the Lady Esquire Shoe Cream came as is (cost: $12.00, value: $10.00).

vintage amber dresser jar
This amber jar is a bit older than the jars above (cost: 50 cents, value: $10.00).

vintage french ivory button hook
The handle on this diminutive glove hook is made of “French Ivory,” another name for celluloid, an early form of plastic (cost: $1.00, value: $8-10.00). Check out this Button Country article for the inside scoop on button hooks.

vintage jewelry
I bought this necklace because I thought it might be a [highly collectible] Miriam Haskell, but I’ve not had a chance to research it yet (cost: $1.00, value: ?). The earrings on the left are clip-ons that I bought with a project in mind (cost: 50 cents). The large floral pin will be for sale (cost: $1.00, value: $10.00). In the center is a thread holder (cost: 50 cents, value: $15.00).

vintage thread holder
When you unscrew it, a small spool of thread is revealed with room for several needles as well.

vintage pressed glass pitcher
Although the colorless, pressed glass market is practically dead, I couldn’t leave this lovely, low-priced pitcher behind (cost: $1.00, value: $15-20.00). In the good old days (back in the 80s and 90s), it would have brought $40-50.00).

vintage wire basket with limes
Wire baskets, on the other hand, sell quite well these days (cost: 50 cents, value: $10.00), as will the faux limes (cost: $1.00, value: $12.00).

vintage Lincoln books
There is always interest in Lincoln, especially with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War last year (cost: 50 cents each, value: $10.00+ each). I need to do some research on them.

vintage rattan hat
It seems likely that this large rattan hat was a tourist souvenir from the Far East. I think it would make a great piece of wall art (cost: 25 cents, value: $10.00).

vintage aqua skisFinal Find: A pair of awesome, aqua skis with boots (cost: $3.00, value: $40-50.00 for the skis). Their original (vintage) wood surface has been covered with paint, reducing their value, but I’m planning to use them as part of my “Blue Christmas” decorating this year.

vintage ski boots
I’m considering selling the vintage, leather boots separately because they are just so wonderful (value: $50-60.00).

  1. Love the flower frog! I collected them but I’ve never seen a plastic one. Also love little reindeer, I’ve become obsessed with cute vintage deer for Christmas decorations! Oh, and I’ve been looking for cheap skis for Christmas as well!

  2. This week’s finds remind me of some of my shopping excursions – random items, but with intention. I have the deer that’s on the right of your photo, and I love those boots on those skis (yes, I would sell separately and leave the skis for a project). I can just imagine the struggle with your dog and the alligator, lol. Have a great trip to Pittsburgh, Diana.

  3. Interesting finds, love the ski’s as they look quite a bit like my first pair. I was so glad when they came out with shorter ones…later on. Both those Lincoln books should be good. The first one is a reprint of an earlier version, I believe as I had an original and sent it to a friend in New Zealand. Wonderful stuff!

  4. Love your treasures especially the sweet deer and the aqua ski’s. They are perfect for a winter vignette. I have to thank you for perfect timing for a tidbit of info I needed….I just listed a marked French Ivory vanity set and I did not know that it was another name for celluloid. I didn’t know if the set was celluloid or bakelite and that answered it!

  5. Hi Diana! 🙂
I love all your finds…but love the little deer, so cute…and they will look so cute as Christmas decorations!
The thread and needle holder is so amazing! Like nothing I have ever seen before!
Have fun at the 60th anniversary – that is so amazing and something for them to be very proud of! 🙂

  6. Very unique finds this week, Diana! I think you are right about the hat… great idea for wall art. The pitcher looks a little bit like a Heisei but like you said, glass is just not interesting anymore! Enjoy your trip to PA…. have a great week.

  7. I love the things you found. The alligator head is very unusual and I think will sell fast. I like the flower frog in the box. So many great finds. Have a great weekend. Dianne

  8. Too funny about your dog Diana! You need to feed him better. lol! Really great stuff. I love the deer, the jars, and the ski’s! I have an old pair that I love, but that aqua is pretty darn sweet! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
