How to Make a Chalkboard Out of an Old Griddle

Hi everyone! There are myriads of chalkboard projects out there. After all, just about anything can be painted with chalkboard paint–metal, plastic, wood, and more. I’ve seen a lot of quirky projects out there, some that work, and some that don’t. I’ve got a project today that I’m not completely sure about. You’ll have to let me know what you think. Over the week-end, I attended several garage sales and at one I bought an old griddle for twenty-five cents. Why? You may ask.

vintage griddleI liked the medium size of this pan, its rivets and the sturdy handle. Otherwise, it appeared to be just an ordinary griddle.

Then I decided to attach a Scrabble tile-holder to act as a chalk-holder (thanks Dianne at Deanie’s Stash for the great idea!). Before attaching, I gave it a coat of medium stain.

Duco cement
I used Duco cement that I had on hand to adhere the holder to the bottom of the griddle.

So if I don’t want it sticking out oddly from the wall, I’ll have to hang it with a traditional plate hanger. (You know, the metal thingy with the springs.) Or, it could simply lean against the wall on a shelf or cupboard.

So that’s my idea for the week. What do you think? Yay or nay on the griddle turned chalkboard?

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

  1. I love the look of the griddle turned chalkboard. I think it is just right to prop on a shelf or counter. I think it works so my vote is yay!

  2. This is a super idea…I have a huge iron skillet (I mean huge) that I may just use as is…and hang it up…if I can find a stud in the wall to hang it from. Great share, thanks, Sandi

  3. Hi Diana! 🙂
I love this, such a great idea, I have seen similar pans at the thrift store and they would have made great chalk boards. I did not know that you could get chalkboard paint in a spray can! Will have to look for that!
I love the saying on the chalkboard too, cute!

  12. The best part is the little ledge on the botom to hold the chalk. I already have a griddle. and the paint, all I need is a ledge. Thanks for an awesome idea.
