Farmhouse Tiered Stand Made Out of Thrifted Junk

Hi everyone–I hope you had a great weekend! Mine was overtaken by a prom and a wedding, but it was all good. I had a bit of junking time on Friday as I drove to my antique booth, so that satisfied my vintage shopping urge. How about you? Did you make it to any garage sales or thrift shops? I spent $26.00 at one sale and nearly filled my back seat. I’ll tease you with two of my buys: a large, oak splint laundry basket ($3.00) and a silver plated champagne bucket ($2.00). The full story will be forthcoming, I promise. Meanwhile, how about learning how to make a farmhouse tiered stand out of thrifted junk?

farmhouse tiered standI will not misrepresent myself and tell you that this project is super easy; it’s just fairly easy 🙂 It involves the purchase and application of two double-headed screws, which necessarily involves the use of a drill.

Misc. pie tins and candlesticksBut it all started with a small collection of cake and tart tins, along with miscellaneous candlesticks. I had fun mixing and matching them and ended up with a number of pedestal stands (a future post) and one tiered stand.

base of tiered stand with lemonsI chose this candlestick for the base, a piece of a chair spindle for the center, and the handle from an old tool for the handle of the stand. Each piece was painted with one coat of DecoArt “Carbon” chalky paint, then distressed (sanded), and finally waxed. You can get the details on how to connect all of the pieces using double headed screws from this post I wrote last August: DIY Farmhouse Tiered Stand.

The top tier contains some faux boxwood that I also had on hand.

farmhouse tiered standI’m enjoying it with the succulents for now, but it could be filled with so many other things, like fruit or how about cupcakes?!! What would you fill it with?

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite pass-times entails buying old junk at thrift stores and garage sales and then upcycling it into something new and home decor-worthy. Happily, I think this project fits the bill.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. Tiered trays are so attractive and versatile. I never get tired of looking how everyone puts their own spin on it. I love the way you made yours.

    1. I agree, there are so many ways to make them–each new and interesting. Thanks for dropping by, Debra!

  2. Have you ever used silicone caulk to adhere your parts for the tiered stand? I have been making some yard art/totems from glass pieces, and used the caulk for that. You can’t take it apart to clean it, but is that a big issue? Just wondering, because I have a lot of candle sticks and tart pans to put together!

    1. No I haven’t, Lois. I’m not really familiar with that material. Would it go on too thick and sort of squish out and make a mess? That’s kind of what I’m picturing, LOL. And, no taking the stand apart is not important, in fact you shouldn’t really or you’ll eventually the screws will have no wood left to “grab.” I’d love to hear how it goes for you and see some photos of your finished projects!

  3. NOW I understand WHY you collect the tool handles; I wondered from an earlier post. I like the urn-shaped handle on your earlier one, but both stands are awesome. Add cake/tart pans to my “look for” list! I’d like to see you decorate one for Christmas with a taffeta plaid bow on the handle, greens, and your vintage bulbs. Maybe a Nativity scene with kings and camels at the bottom, shepherds and sheep in the middle, Baby Jesus, folks, and angel at the top? Almost a Christmas tree! Got some yardsaling in Sat.; you’d be proud of my .25 treasures!

    1. Ha, ha–things are starting to make sense, right?!! I liked the urn-shaped handle, too and am keeping my eye out for more. I think your Christmas decorating ideas are perfect. I just hope I can remember them for next year 🙂 Glad you found some treasures on your journey–

  4. This is a great repurposing project because the items needed are usually plentiful. I love tiered anything! It doubles or triples your space instantly. I would love to store little jars of buttons and beads on this. I could see cupcakes on this as well. It would be great as a display at a craft show – especially if you had a ton of them in different heights.

  5. Great stand that you made! i really like these stands and have also been making them for years. No two alike is the best part, and SO many uses both inside and outside. LIke you I really enjoy re purposing vintage items in to something new and useful.

  6. This is simply gorgeous! Such a creative way to transform junk finds into something beautiful and useful! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing this at the Farmhouse Friday link party! I’ve chosen it as one of the features for tomorrow’s party 🙂
