Christmas Tags–A Vintage Skirt Upcycle

I’ve been getting into a little bit of a Christmas mood the past few days. How about you?

A few months ago, I saw this gorgeous plaid, wool skirt at a garage sale. At the time, I was buying up all different kinds of textiles to try out with my Sizzix Big Kick die cut machine. I thought the plaid would make attractive Christmas tags.

I love them! And they are so easy to make. First, I Mod Podged the fabric to cardboard (I save up cereal and other kinds of boxes for my tags), and then ran it through the Sizzix, using my tag-shaped die cut. This makes a very tight seal between the fabric and the cardboard.

Here’s my Sizzix Big Kick machine along with two die cuts that I bought at a garage sale. They don’t seem to be making them anymore, but the Sizzix Big Shot is almost identical.

The die are rather pricey ($20 and up), so I only buy them at garage sales or on sale at craft stores. I’ve got four altogether. These two and two from Tim Holtz–a bird with cage and a set of three flower shapes.

After die cutting the tag shape, I added gray ribbon, a silver bell, and a tiny little “merry christmas” that I printed out on my computer using the Veteran Typewriter font.

I keep the backs blank so I can write a little note when I’m using them as gift tags. Check out my post–Making New Tags Out of Old Linens–for more info and also for a tutorial on how to make them without a die cut machine.

  1. Holy crap – I love that idea! And I have my daughters old plaid wool uniform skirts from high school that would be perfect for that. Now I just have to find out what a Sizzix machine is. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. It's a brand of die cut machines — a typically lower priced one as it's not electric. I put an amazon button for one at the end of the post ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Oh my gosh, I love these! I am crazy in love with plaid!! Last year I made a couple pillows out of a plaid dress that I got at a thrift. I have a few scraps left. Can't wait to make tags! I don't have a sizzix. Will just have to cut them by hand. Won't look quite as professional, but I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
