This Week’s Vintage Finds #133
Hi everyone! Hope you had an enjoyable 4th of July. We had a handful of our kid’s friends over for a BBQ and fireworks. Now that fireworks are legal in NY, we are thoroughly enjoying them. But you’re here to see some vintage finds, right? Today you’ll be seeing a mix of garage sale and thrift store finds from this past Friday. Enjoy!
I found some miscellaneous child-sized blue willow for sale at one of the thrift store and chose two pieces to buy, including this 5″ cake platter (cost: 79¢, value: $12-18.00).
Both pieces are marked “Made in Japan,” likely sometime between 1920 and 1950.
The teapot measures about 4″ high (cost: $1.49, value: $12-18.00).

A nice old enamelware coffee pot (cost: $2.00, value: $15-18.00) and set of four napkins made from vintage toweling (cost: $2.00, value: $10-12.00).

A well-loved, vintage suitcase (cost: $2.00, value: $15.00).
An interesting broshure about New York State dating to about the 1950’s (cost: 50¢, value: $5-6.00).
A vintage broshure about the state Capitol, also dating to the 50’s (cost: 50¢, value: $5-6).
Someone donated a large number of oil on canvas paintings to a nearby thrift store and Nancy and I took advantage of it; we each bought two. Interestingly, they were cut off their stretchers, so I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to go about framing them (cost: $2.99, value: $20-35.00 framed).
Love the colors of this larger still life of fruit (cost: $3.99, value: $25-40.00 framed).
A sweet 10″ metal lamp with a glass base (cost: $2.00, value: $25-30.00 with shade). And guess what? I think I have the perfect shade! Just needs a coat of paint.
Nancy and I drove a long way out of our way to hit an estate sale that we later learned had been advertised as “industrial.” I’m not so sure we would have gone quite so far to shop this one had we known, but we did, so we made the best of it and both ended up with some cool finds, like this painters box (cost: $2.00, value: $15.00).
I picked up this Kraft cheese box at the same sale (cost: 50¢, value: $5-6.00).
I also bought this beat-up wooden box at the industrial sale and am looking forward to stenciling something on the side (cost: $3.00). What do you think I should write?
Here’s a crate I stenciled a while back:

Final Find: Kind of a crazy buy, I know, but I’ve always been attracted to horses in this Chinese-style(?) (cost: $4.00). I’m planning to give it a coat of off-white chalk paint to create a sort of stone-like surface and then perhaps give it a coat of dark wax. What do you think — CRAZY or BRILLIANT?!!

That yellow horse thing looks like a matador (Mexican?) lamp/light I have from the 50’s or 60’s?…my friend just found one exactly like my matador and paid 20. or 25.00 for it (I think)…I will try to snap a phone picture and send to your email…
Awesome finds and great prices! I would’ve bought everything!
Great finds. I’m anxious to see how the horse turns out 🙂
Tania
great finds love the paintings and the horse have a great week
Cool finds! The suitcase and the tin box are my favorites. But I’m sure I wouldn’t have passed up any of that, either. As for the paintings, maybe you could attach them to a canvas board? They’re pretty great too, by the way. 🙂
Love all your finds and I would have bought everyone of them myself. The small metal lamp is my favorite find this week.
All are interesting, but especially love the coffee pot. I love all things wooden, like boxes, crates, drawers, etc, so I loved them and the painters box is interests me. Will see what you put on the last box.
interesting to me, sorry. (fingers got mixed up ) 🙂
You bought some great things this week. It is hard to pick a favorite but I think the Blue Willow stands out.
I love the horse too. For me, I love the color like it is, but I’m sure it would be pretty painted. If I may say so, I think you’ve undervalued the suitcase. I can get $30-40 on those vintage hard-sided ones. Love ALL your finds tho.
I would say the style of the horse looks more Greek or Roman in style. I like the color “as is” but it will be very interesting to see how your idea comes to life.
I have always loved Blue Willow. I know someone who has a large collection that they are gong to part with. I suggested they open an Etsy shop. Do you happen to know if it is selling well?
As always, you find the most delightful things!
You find the best things!
Thanks for sharing with SYC.
On the box, I think I would do something like “Tools of the Trade” ===would make a great gift…for anyone—you can fill it with different things(kitchen)(gardening)(sports)(fishing) etc., as the seasons change. And I bet you will see more than one of those. Buried here in the remodel…miss seeing everyone, Sandi
I’m behind on my reading and commenting as usual. The “industrial” sale sounds like it would have been fun. Awesome bunch of finds this time around.
I love the Blue Willow. Did you ever paint the horse? I think he looks Greek/Roman, too. I love doing a copper/bronze vertigris finish on stuff; looked like aged metal. Ivory would be awesome, too. Faux marble? Jade green? Turquoise with black antiquing? Choices, choices!
