Vintage Dresser-Top Valet Update
Hi everyone! I have a quick project for you today–the transformation of a fairly unattractive dresser-top valet with just a little bit of paint, wax, and some cool graphics.
Valets might seem kind of old fashioned, maybe your dad or your granddad had one. But after giving mine a makeover, I’m thinking valets aren’t just for men anymore! We could all use some help corralling our pocket change and jewelry, right? I think everything looks better when it’s organized somehow instead of simply strewn across a dresser top.
I purchased this “lovely” piece for a dollar back in early July. Judging by the wood color and the shape of all of its parts, I’d say it dates to the 1980s.
I gave it one coat of American Decor “Primitive” chalk paint, distressed it a little, and then gave it a coat of clear wax.
I found some graphics over atย The Graphic Fairy that I liked and added this French one (I’ve no idea what it says) to the top.
Then I added the bee to the bottom. I wrote a blog post not too long ago aboutย how I use transparencies to transfer graphics to my projects.
Like I said, everything looks better when it has someplace to “bee,” don’t you agree?
The lovely scratch, which I didn’t notice until I cleaned the mirror, helps give the allusion that this is a truly vintage piece. I wouldn’t mind having this on my dresser, would you?

That turned out great Diana. Love the bee graphic. So sweet!
Thanks Tuula!!
I think it looks great, and the mirror’s a real bonus! I never would have give this piece a second look but you did and ended up with a treasure!
xoKathleen
Thanks Kathleen–you so sweet ๐
I think it turned out really pretty Diana. Still very useful and nicely updated. Love the graphics. Good job.
I need to try American Decor chalk paint.

Hi Audrey! Thanks so much; you are always so encouraging. I really do like AD chalk paint and you can get it pretty cheaply if you use your weekly coupon to whichever craft store near you has it. (Our Hobbly Lobby carries it.)
It definitely looks much better! I would not have bought it but now I can realize how much a change can be done!
A little bit of paint can go a long way, Rose!!
Next time I see one of these guys it is coming home with me. Yours turned out so nice. Love that bee!
๐ Would love to see how you transform it, Sharon ๐
I love this! Paint really makes it look great and so do those graphics.
Thanks, Cheryl!
Hi Diana! ๐
This turned out so pretty and the graphic is perfect. The graphic basically says Founded in 1844, and bonneterie means hosiery and mercerie means haberdashery which to me means the wares sold by a shop owner…
Love how this turned out!
Kimberley
So “Hosiery & Haberdashery.” Thanks SO much for the translation, Kimberly–you’re brilliant ๐
Great project! Some how your feed has stopped on my blog roll-have to go find out why-I thought your where taking a break!
Thanks Darrielle! I transferred from Blogger to WordPress and it’s wreaked havoc with my followers. People who have lost track of me seem to have to sign up again. Did you read me via Bloglovin’? Most people who’ve had trouble were following me via email and once the re-enrolled the problem was solved. Thanks for finding me ๐
Nicely done, with just the right touches.
Thanks, Julie!
