This Week’s Vintage Finds #87

Hi everyone! I had fun garage saling [and curbside rescuing] this past week-end. I tell you, it’s hard to beat free. Someday, I will tell you the story of how I dumpster-dove at a nearby property for several weeks and rescued thousands of dollars worth of antiques.

Nothing will ever live up to that experience, but I still get a kick out of free, every time. But without further ado, here are this week’s vintage finds.

Vintage Finds #87 adirondackgirlatheart.comI find that it doesn’t take me long to get absolutely overwhelmed by large quantities of linens, and they tend not to sell very quickly for me.

vintage crocheted doiliesBut when I find them in great condition, for just a quarter each, well, then I have to make an exception and scoop them all up. Check out this informative article written by Rita at Panoply: Tips, Facts: Success with Vintage Linens.

newer canning jarsThese newer canning jars have a great vintage look, and I knew I had vintage lids at home that would fit them. I plan to use them in my pantry (cost: $1.00 each).

cement tile with sun burst embossingAn attractive garden tile made of cement (cost: $1.00, value: $10-12.00).

vintage creamersLike doilies, I find that creamers can take a while to sell, but again, at a quarter each, I couldn’t pass them up (cost: 25 cents each, value: $5.00 each). (SOLD)

marks on vintage creamersThe rose decorated creamer was made in Japan, the forget-me-not in England by Royal Albert.

bicentennial plate Not too long ago, my sweet daughter and I had a conversation about the Bicentennial and the fun I remember having participating in all of the hooplah. I told her I had a box of memorabilia stored away [somewhere]. So when I saw this platter at a garage sale, I decided to pick it up to show her (cost: 75 cents, value: $10.00).

antique bottle brush treesI mentioned my curbside discoveries. Among them was a box of slightly dilapidated bottle brush trees. They are nonetheless quite charming. Don’t you think?

vintage base to bottle brush treeI found the variety of bases interesting.

vintage bottle brush tree baseI’ve never seen this base before.

vintage bottle brush tree baseOr this one. I suspect I will put them all to good use this coming Christmas.

scrap wood

Most of the rest of my haul from the curbside involved wood, lots of wonderful wood in all shapes, sizes and colors.

scrap woodI have all kinds of signs and hanging racks planned for these beautiful [free!] pieces of wood.

antique table baseI had to dig to rescue this folding table base. I think I have the perfect top for it.

vintage yard stick A.B. Borst Funiture & UndertakingsThis is my favorite piece–a measuring stick from A.B. Borst Furniture & Undertaking, c.1883, Cobleskill (NY). It will make a great wall hanging–perhaps over my sliding glass doors.

It’s especially intriguing to me because my family owned a funeral home in North Creek (NY) that started out as a furniture store. Apparently, in earlier times, furniture stores supplied [wooden] caskets for burials, and many of them eventually transitioned from furniture stores to funeral homes.

wooden berry tray

Another fun piece from the curbside pile. It looks like a berry tray without the curved, wooden handle.

red scrap woodThese red slabs will make wonderful accent pieces, made over into signs or hanging racks.

 Isn’t the red wonderful?

vintage wooden shelf with drawersThis piece, while not old, has great potential. I’m going to fill in that hole in the center and give it a makeover ASAP (cost: $3.00, value: $35-40.00).

vintage enamel-top cupboardFinal Fabulous Find: A super cute, c. 1940s enamel top cabinet. It needs a good cleaning, inside and out, but it’s otherwise in great condtion (cost: $5.00, value: $40.00). (SOLD, $25)

Thanks for sharing in my vintage joy!! And I wish you happy hunting 🙂

  1. Love your finds! The jar lids are Hazel Atlas not Anchor Hocking (hence the Atlas on the front) 🙂

  2. I'm enjoying reading about your garage sailing and free finds. My daughter and son in law have a great time with both up in NH. As to the jar lid liners I've found pieces of them in a small creek on my property, probably washing out from someone's old dumping spot up stream. Occasionally a whole one shows up.

  3. Great finds! I hauled home a little bit of architectural salvage this weekend too. Could've hauled home more, but we got hit with a nasty thunderstorm at the end of the auction when I would've loaded it… and I didn't want to put wet, dirty wood in my truck!

  4. Wow, I could hardly wait to see what you got! All that wood, amazing! I've said it before, and I'll say it again…'curbside finds are the best!'
Love those bottle brush trees, have not seen some of the ones you got before. So cute!
    Have a wonderful week! 🙂

  5. Great finds! I too, saw some free wood by the curb and exclaimed: "A WOODEN PALLET!" We need that! Go back, go back… We can make all kinds of things out of it!!" Hubby did not stop and when we arrived home last night I showed him all of the things people make on Pinterest. He is sold now on FREE pallets. 🙂 Love all of your finds ….can't wait to see your signs and other creations!

  6. I have a weakness for both linens and pitchers. And love finding old wood! Nothing beats the awesome patina that comes with age. I love the bottle brush trees with the unique bases! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  7. Wow, you have some wonderful finds this week. I am in love with vintage linens and at $.25 each I would have had to scoop them all up also. I love the bottlebrush trees and that cabinet with the little wire inset drawers is going to be awesome. Thank you for sharing all these great finds with Share It One More Time. Cathy
