This Week’s Vintage Finds #89
Hi everyone! I’ve taken a cue from Distressed Donna Down Home and came very close to no thrifting or shopping of any kind this past week. Can you believe it? Donna went weeks and weeks, and then finally broke her shopping “fast” about a week or so ago. To tell you the truth, I always slow down in July and August because of the heat and because it allows me to focus more on family. I had determined to stay away from all sales, but on the way home from dropping my sweet daughter off at play practice, I saw a sign and thought, “Aww, one little sale won’t hurt!”
Right away, I noticedย a small collection of model ships lying on the ground. With everything being so nautical this season, they seemed like a wise purchase, though, I’m definitely stretching the definition of “vintage” with these beauties.
In the end, I bought four boats, including thisย pair of 7″ย decorative sailย boatsย (cost: $2.00 each, value: $15-18.00 each). (I think this might be the back of the boats, oops.
And I bought two of these 19 1/2″ sail boats as well (cost: $3.00 each, value: $25.00 each).
Like the boats, this ceramic hand is not vintage, but it isย decoratively interesting (cost: $2.00, value: $10.00).
I’m going to sneak in a purchase I made a few weeks ago that never made it into a blog post–this box-of-amazing-wonders, filled with all kinds of rusty, cruddy junk. Whatever would possess a person to pay money for such things?!! It is most definitely some kind of sickness, one that allows you to see the potential in all sorts of junk, even if it’s covered with rust and dirt. The guy said $10.00; I said how about $5.00? He said how about $6.00; I said, ‘kay.
This antique brass bell is just one of the items I removed from my box-of-amazing-wonders. It cleaned up quite nicely (value: $20.00).
As you can see, I still have some work to do on the clapper.
I recently bought a vintage game, Masterpiece, and found this pencil inside. It must be a beginner pencil for Kindergartners. Right?
Another item from the box-of-amazing-wonders, a light cage that one would use in a garage for some extra lighting while working on aย car. I’m thinking I’ll clean it up, put a base on the narrow bottom and put a votive candle in it. Just an idea. I’ll fill you in on how it goes.
The lighting in my house was very bad all day due to off and on rainstorms, so I had to get creativeย to get a decent image of this huge demi john used for wine making. Again, I’m stretching the limits of “vintage,” but it seemedย too cool to pass up. I thought I might put it next to my fireplace, where I currently have a much smaller, olive-toned one filled with white lights, but it’s just too big. Right now it’s sitting in an empty corner of the room–not a bad location, but it needs some lights of its own to fill it’s 54″ circumference (cost: $25.00, value: $200.00 new).
I have quite a little yardstick collection going now, but the interesting thing about this one is…
it’s 48″ long! (cost: 50 cents, value: $4-5.00)
A lovely piece of junk wood, snatched from a roadside pile. I know, I know, I just brought home a load of “free” wood, but this one is nice, isn’t it? I think I’m going to attach some hooks and turn it into a rack.
Final Find: I found this cigar box at the very bottom of a “Free” box. When I opened it, I knew right away that it and its contents would be coming home with me.
It was filled with wonderful steampunk-ish junk, just the sort that my sweet daughter loves. We use the stuff for art projects, and she and I have recently begun to make some jewelry with these sorts of things. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, for sure.

Diana,
You always find the best stuff. Love that school bell and pencil. What a perfect gift that would be for a teacher.
Have a great day.
Kris
Love the boats and hand! I would probably paint the raw ones a turquoise color!
i love that you tell us what you paid and what the item is worth. You are the only blogger I have seen that does that.
I really do not think I am a good role model for abstinence when I only lasted for four weeks. Then I fell off that wagon with a very large thud! But I thank you. I remember the teacher – I think Miss Frances? – with Ding Dong School. – Love the bell and the First Writer pencil. The most amazing treasures! Bow and stern – front and back.
Wonderful finds. I can never pass up yardsticks and that demijohn is incredible. sb
Hi Diana! ๐
I love the boats! And that demi john, I have the exact same one that I got at a Sally Anne in Canada for $10.00…I cannot believe it is worth about 200.00 … Wahoo! ๐
I love your posts with the prices!
Kimberley
Crikey! $10.00–wow, you did great ๐ How are you using yours, Kimberly?
Diana, love the box of junk! I would’ve gotten it, too. And finding goodies in the cigar box, priceless! Well, almost. ๐ It’s always great buying one thing, then finding it’s filled with all sorts of treasures! I purchased a small wicker picnic hamper at an estate sale the other day for $2, and then found out it was full of old silver utensils. Yahoo! I found your post on the shop light and it turned out to be a wonderful table accessory !
Wow love sail boats, I found some at a flea market last year! You did well this week.. thanks for sharing them at Dream Create and Inspire.
Thanks
Maria
It’s hard to pass up a sale because the hunt is so fun. We went to Downey, ID this past weekend for a get away with our kids and grands. We took the kids on a history tour of where their grandparents grew up. I saw an estate sale sign and I wanted to go so badly, but knew the kids wanted to get back to Downata and swim. I didn’t go, but still wondering what I passed up. lol! I think the junk box for $6 was a great score. Also love the bell and the cigar box. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Lovely finds, again, Diana! And thanks for linking up! Your blog looks great.
Wonderful finds – I will be featuring your post in this week’s Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
Diana, you always find such great stuff – love those sail boats and the cigar box full of junk. So much fun. My Mom and Dad were “collectors” of vintage back in the day and they would go to yard sales, auctions, etc. It was always so much fun to go through all the boxes and find the “treasures” they brought home. Thank you for sharing at Share It One More Time. Cathy
