This Week’s Vintage Finds #62

Hi everyone! The weather people have warned us that tomorrow may bring a big snow storm, here in upstate New York. My sweet daughter’s school called early this evening to announce that tomorrow will be a snow day–no school! We are hunkering down and dressing warm.
Over the week-end, I visited three thrift stores and helped a friend sort through some of her aunt’s belongings. I always enjoy both helping friends and pawing through piles of “junk.” We only worked on the main floor, but before I left, I took a peak at the attic and the basement–oh, boy! They were both full. I’ll go back at least one more time to help. But right now, it’s time to take a look at some vintage finds.

This newer piece of ironstone, which is going right in my cupboard, is marked, “Burleigh Ware, Burgess & Leigh, Burslem, England.”

Burslem, near Stoke-on-Trent in England, is located in Staffordshire, well-known for its production of vast amounts of transferware pottery. Burleigh & Leigh were among those who produced popular transferware patterns like Blue Willow and Chintz. When we lived in England, I visited several of the potteries, including Wedgwood and Port Merion. Stoke-on-Trent is quite near Derby, where we lived.

This is my third thermos, so I guess it’s official now, I’m collecting thermoses! I’m thinking about doing some red plaid decorating for Valentine’s Day, so I think this’ll come in handy. Priced at just $1.99 it was in my price range, and I think the pump action is actually pretty handy. If I were to sell this c.1970 thermos, I’d price it at about $12-15.00.

The friend who asked for help sorting her aunt’s things let me take these two 15″ cake tins home. I just love their size, their weight, and their aged surface.

I’m planning to attach each to a chunky candlestick or piece of a table leg to make a pair of nice, big pedestal stands. (Their appearance is a bit more pleasing in person than in the photos!)

The City Mission sells their hardcover books three for a dollar. Pretty amazing, I know. So this trio of Christian classics are now on my night stand.

It’s nearly impossible for me to pass up cheap crafting supplies. Sad, I know. The Restore had these goodies–brass charms and “rusty” wire cord, all for a dollar. In the basket they went.

This Week's Vintage Finds #62

A sweet Father’s day gift for someone special. I think it dates from the 1940s, and I’ll list it in my Etsy shop for about $12.00.

I bought this 25 cent French dictionary to use the pages for crafts. I have to stop since my craft “library” is threatening to overtake my work room(!).

It has some nice color illustrations.

And some nice black and whites, also.

I bought this $1 wool scarf because of its darling pink polka dots and because I have a couple of crafty ideas for it. You’ll have to stop by later and see what I come up with.

This Week's Vintage Finds #62

My ribbon collection, which I had strung on two long dowels, sitting on a shelf, just fell off the shelf. It’s evidently time to find a better way store it. When I saw this towel holder at Goodwill, I thought it might just do the trick–and it does–at least for some of the rolls.

This Week's Vintage Finds #62

I have a Sizzix die cut machine, but I didn’t buy these die cuts to keep, but rather to sell in my Etsy shop. Goodwill had them priced so low, I thought I’d give it a shot. They typically retail for $10-20.00 each.

I don’t think anyone could pass up a $1 roll of Laura Ashley wall paper, could they? This roll came in a white floral pattern on beige. Good to have on hand for crafts.

These woven place mats, for sale at Goodwill at the excellent price of $3.99, make me very happy. I’m slowly taking the “country” out of my kitchen. I took down green check valances and removed a set of green check and a set of red check place mats. These make a lovely alternative, and there are eight of them–an unusually good find, I think.

That’s it for me. How about you?

  1. That ironstone pitcher is fabulous. I love the sculpted design! Great treasures, Diana. I too collect old books.

Have a cozy sort of day. We had a dab o' snow here in north central North Carolina, and it's going to melt fast. The dog and I had a delightful walk through our woods just before dawn this morning. The light was beautiful. I was camera-less, doggone it.

  2. Great finds Diana … I love ironstone and the little pitcher is lovely. You will have a lot of fun crafting with that great French dictionary.
    Take care and stay safe.

  3. Boy, looks like you did good this week! Our senior center has those type of book sales too. I try to get some of them each time they have them. My kids and grandkids love to Read!

  4. Good eye, Diana! And not only do you have a good eye, you have good ideas, too! I like how you share the price you might be able to get for each item. Some people have a hard time deciding "how much."

Thanks so much for taking part in my "Let's Talk Vintage" linky party this week!

  5. Love the ironstone and the thermos! I collect them and I think I might have one like that. lol! I'm going to have to go look. The dictionary has some fabulous images!
    hugs,
    Jann

  6. I am stealing the idea to corral ribbon with a paper towel holder. My ribbon rolls sometime escape their drawer and roll about the floor flinging ribbon bits everywhere.

  7. You found some great buys. I like the idea of the paper towel holder for ribbon. Will be on the watch for one myself. Thanks!

  8. ohhh loving ALL your finds, that ribbon holder from a towel bar is AWESOME. It's hard to change a room all at once isn't it? I mean you don't realize how dated a look is or how unhappy you are with it until suddenly you just change it. Love those place mats they're kind of funky and unexpected…
