I’ve been thinking that I’d like to start each week with some sort of focus, so I decided to select a scripture verse to establish a theme. This week I chose Proverbs 24:3-4.
This verse speaks to me on several levels. I tells me that a house filled with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge results in a house full of treasure. For me, the treasures are many: loving relationships between family members, a sense of peace and joy that is welcoming to all who enter, and a place of blessing where any who enter may find refreshment and encouragement, perhaps even healing.
Though wisdom is mentioned first, knowledge is the first step in the process of building a treasure-filled house. Knowledge consists of facts and information that we learn through education, family life, reading, television, friendship, godly teaching, the Bible itself. However, a person can be knowledgeable without having real understanding.
Understanding comes through contemplation of the things we know, especially spiritual truths. Psalm 119:130 describes it as a process where the unfolding of his word gives light; it imparts understanding. We can think of it like the completion of a puzzle. As we fit together pieces of knowledge, we begin to see the larger picture. We begin to understand, and the more knowledge we acquire and the more we think about it, the greater our understanding.
Understanding can then lead to wisdom, our ultimate goal, where we are able to apply godly knowledge and understanding to our life, and perhaps even the lives of others. I believe there is a mysterious element to wisdom involving the Holy Spirit. James tells us to ask for wisdom, so it’s something that can be developed in us and given mysteriously as well. The two working together render a powerful result!
And so Lord I pray that we would take time with you to learn and grow, so that we will develop godly wisdom that will enable us to build homes of beauty, filled with treasure.
I wish you all a week filled with blessing and hearts filled with wisdom!
