Nowadays, my personal goal involves connecting with God–my Father, my Dad–who loves me deeply, more than performing a series of tasks. I want to step away from my quiet place and carry God’s presence, his love, and his peace with me throughout the day. That means, for me, sometimes just sitting, focused on Him, yes, but not feeling the need to pray through a list or read X number of Bible pages.
In re-reading a favorite of mine, Stepping Heavenward (Elizabeth Prentiss), I discovered her thoughts on this topic:
It is not necessary to say much to God. Oftentimes one does not speak much to a friend whom one is delighted to see; one looks at him with pleasure; one speaks certain short words to him which are mere expressions of feeling…A word, a sigh, a sentiment, says all to God, 233.
And in this simple conversation, He will reply, perhaps through a word or a feeling or a sense of peace or a sense of his nearness, his love, and his care. It is an exchange not to be missed, precious life-giving moments with the One who loves us so.
